Haydn Coolant Alarm - Mk3 vs Mk1

Hi - Just a quick question, not a debate about whether I need one or not If I take a Mk 3 and chop off the ciggy plug/sockets - will I have a Mk 1 ? I know it sounds like a daft question, but I have my reasons

Not so odd (at least I don't think so). I see on your website the Mk 3s are £68, and the Mk 1 £70. I was thinking about getting the Mk 3, because I couldn't decide whether to wire it in permanently or not. If the cig plug was only providing the power, then I could chop it off later and wire it in permanently, should I so decide. Not having seen one of the alarms I wasn't aware that the alarm was in the cig plug as well. I just like to know my options before I buy anything.

Ah ! I see. The Mk 2 and Mk3 are a bit less co's they don't sell so well. They do in fact cost more to produce.

Hello Haydn

Bongo baby will be ours at last next week, and I was about to order a Mark 1, 2 or 3 (?) from you direct, as I see the Bongo Shop is shut for a bit. However, followed your weblink here, and also saw the TM-2 "Engine Watchdog". Looks good. Are you confident about it as a low coolant alarm instead of your own design alarm, or would you recommend fitting both. Silly question perhaps - but, if so, why?

Anybody else already tried the TM-2?

The low coolant alarm is just that - it detects coolant loss. The TM2 is a temperature monitor & alarm, 2 different alarms doing 2 different jobs, each covering different eventualities. There is also the Mason alarm - http://www.townace.plus.com/ie/ietemga2.htm - to consider, that does a similar job to the TM2 by making the Bongo's own "dumbed down" temp guage more sensitive & providing an audible settable alarm.
I have the low coolant alarm & the Mason alarm fitted, & am also trialing a new alarm for Simon Jones that detects overpressure of the coolant system

Thanks. Yes, I realise the different modus operandi of the TM-2 but it DOES claim to be an effective coolant loss alarm, so I'm interested in Haydn's own views on that, bearing in mind his own direct low coolant sensor based alarms.

I've also posted separately this evening to ask if anybody knows whether the Mason Alarm works OK in the V6 petrol Bongo. Dave mason doesn't know whether the same sensor/gauge combo is used in the V6 as in TD Bongos. Do you happen to know? Was otherwise going to buy and try (then post results), although the TM-2 has now complicated the issue.
