I tried it in S2 as well, memory getting sketchy here but I think it was around 45mph upper limit, again it won't kick in if the speed is excessive.

High speed hold button use
After several discussions on here, I did a few experiments with my hold button & can confirm that if it's all working ok, if you put it on while you're doing 70+ miles an hour in D - it shouldn't kick in, mine repeatedly worked as the speed dropped to 68mph, at which point the revs went up to around 3500 revs, nothing too scary, your gearbox shouldn't end up in pieces all over the road (usal disclaimers apply)- maybe a bit of a shock for any tailgaters though

You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Re: High speed hold button use
This is quite right, the gearbox won't change down until your road speed is slow enough for it to be safe, that includes L as well. I haven't tried slamming it into R on the move, though
I didn't realise the HOLD feature wasn't available all the time, I must try to go a bit faster on the M6 on Sunday and try it out then

Re: High speed hold button use
I meant I tried the hold button while in S2 & it wouldn't change down until 45ish, but you're quite right Muz, even changing down to S2 & L1 isn't possible if the speed/revs are excessive, the lever will will move, but the gear won't change until it's safe, all part of the same safety feature I guess.

Well don't try it then, as I can assure you first will work at 70mph - but not for long though.
Re: High speed hold button use
Most automatics are smart enough not to change into a lower gear if the road speed is too high for that gear.
Having said that I wouldn't want to put that to the test, and unless there is a reason you really need to do that I would advise against it. I never need to manually change the gears in everyday use, if needed the car will kickdown etc if you need to accelerate fast, and to slow down brake linings are somewhat cheaper than a new gearbox.
Good info to know though.

Re: High speed hold button use
I know my v6 easily gets to 70 in hold with a fruity pull over 3500 revs
as far as i dare to it not been much more than 70
but still offers more
, don't know if i fancy trying dropping it into hold at 70 but don't see why it shouldn't is it set by a sensor which could be different on the v6
is it the same gearbox
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
think i need to do some reading up i confess to knowing about food and nout about cooking an automatic gearbox

All disclaimers count as i know nothing

Yip i can confirm that my v6 will even drop down on hold at 80mph doin 5000 revs it redlines at 6500
