Doesn't like hills

Hi there people.
Just got myself a bongo :O)
S plate, 2.5 diesel. 70,000 km pimped with body kit and alloys already will post pics later

Love it but have a real power issue am getting real bad fuel economy, used nearly 1 3/4 of a tank to get to devon and back, around 250 miles.
Plus it doesn't like hills at all, have to floor it so i kicks down a couple of gears before it starts picking up any speed. can't hear any turbo whistle either.
Will check filters tommorrow as have to go to work now , was told it was given a service before I got it, so everything should be OK.
Been reading up about the banjo filter. Where is it and how do I get to it?

where did u get it from was it a reputiple dealer or private ?

Got mine from Freespirit Autos in Chichester.

Also trying to find a spare key blank
got a couple from ebay but there not the right type
The end of the blanks i've found online are narrow at the tip, but my key has a wide tip so can't get the correct profile cut.

Do you have a switch down by your knee with a "engine" on it ??

Don't worry about too much about the key blanks - any key cutter who knows what they're doing shouldn't have a problem finding one to do the job, if they don't, try another key cutter.

Does your bongo have the twin battery set up?, if so there will be a switch by your right knee with the picture of an engine on, make sure this is turned off, this closses a valve in the exhaust that makes the engine work harder in order to warm up the engine quicker for the very cold climate in japan, its not needed over here, if this has been switched on then this will give you the symptons you are refering to.

But word of caution, theres the possibility its has been turned on the back off again, but its quite common for the valve to stick shut once its been turned on. Dont know why this happenes but i presume its because they are stood for so long in japan and on the boat over here.

No I don't have the twin battery setup.

Air filter is fine.
Small bore turbo pipe is fine
Air duct from filter to turbo is fine, getting a good bit of suction from it ( no smart remarks please )
Took out the Banjo filter and gave it a good old clean, there was a bit of gunk in it but not much. It does seem to run alot better now though, so hopefully that was the problem, it only kicks down 1 gear now and seems to get up hills alot easier.

Hi Kiteman, and welcome...That's a smart looking machine you have there! (judging from the avatar pic) You wanna get that little lovely on the "pimp my bongo" section with some more pics!

Assuming you have no mechanical issues, try popping in a tankfull of shell "V" power diesel... It's the equivalent of a long slow dose of injector cleaner, hold the revs just over 4000 rpm (when warm) occasionally to blow the cobwebs out, then re-evaluate when you've used up that tank...(in a couple of hours...)

Drop the passenger window a few inches, then have a listen for the whistle of the turbo between 2250-2500RPM whilst travelling uphill (some peeps ears are more sensitive to it than others, some can't hear it at all).

The bongo is a bit of a flying machine for a 2.5 diesel carrying that much weight around, i've squeezed well over 100MPH out of mine once, in fact, the performance usually surprises new owners... What car did you have before the bongo?

I've got a Seat Ibiza FR as my daily run around 1.9TDI 130 bhp. Goes like stink and on a good run can get well over 65mpg. . Been a bit spoilt with that, so can't really compare it.

Ah, yes they can shift a bit... My other car is only a 115 BHP TDCI, and the bongo does feel a bit "heavy" when i've been driving the car a lot...

Out of interest, and considering the banjo filter sounds as though it was gunged up a bit, what about changing the main fuel filter? Would this make any difference maybe? Also, when you say the air filter was fine, was it completely clean etc.? Is it worth going for a short run with air filter removed to see if that makes any difference as (speaking personally) I found a 2yr old filter (the recommended changeover time) didn't look especially dirty until held against a new one (and even then the difference wasn't dramatic).
