Bongo Lost Her Oomph!

Post by highrover » Mon Jul 20, 2009 10:22 pm

Help! WHile returning home from holiday in Lewis, I heard what sounded like a back-fire just before we pulled into Tesco in Inverness. Had a look around but couldnt see anything obvious. However, when we got back on the road, Bessy had lost her Ooomph - took ages to get up to speed and wouldn't accelerate to speed up/overtake. She wouldn't climb the slightest of hills at any more than 40mph and even then was revving really high. She made it back to Aberdeen but it was a really slow journey. There were 5 of us aboard along with a lot of equipment.

Has anyone had any similar experiences or jknow what the problem is?

Sorry - need a techie for this one but could it be turbo related? There's been other stories of Bongos losing thier oomf but don't recall one quite like this. Have a search though while you're waiting for a decent reply. Good luck and keep us posted. [-o<

Stevie, I don't feel the turbo kicking in and it feels and sounds like it should be changing up a lot quicker than it's doing. I didn't notice any whooshing noise. Something definitely went "bang" though, which sounded like someone else backfiring

have u had any work done recently .a turbo or intercooler pipe could have burst or came off,as can imagine it's hard diagnosing over the net ,but we'll try our hardest to help.

I've done a search and results include Turbo, filters and fuel lines, but I think I'm leaning toward the turbo.

I had work done back in April - Service and timing belt change, but that was about 1000 miles ago.

Check the big pipe that connects to the inlet manifold at the front of the engine (comes from the intercooler). I had a similar incident when that pipe came adrift on the motorway.

Thanks guys, I'll check all that out tomorrow, cos it's dark just now and I've been on the go since 5 this morning - a beautiful drive through Harris, Skye, Loch Carron, Garve and on to Inverness/Aberdeen. I'll let you know.

Also the large air intake pipe joining onto the Turbo. I heard of one which came loose, giving the same result.

Good luck. [-o<

Certainly sounds to me that one of the pipes after the turbo outlet has popped off or burst. Good luck, but it should be an easy fix if that is the case.

Coolhand - You de man!! It was indeed the pipe from the inlet manifold that had blown off! Back in place now and ready for the next travel episode................. Belladrum for the Tartan Heart Festival!!

Thanks also to Brora, BongoMTBer, Stevie & Mike.

Thanks again guys. This forum Rocks! (or heuchs and teuchs!)
