would the relay, if for instance not putting enough charge through give me these problems?

No the relay will be for the leisure battery, the starting battery will start the engine which in turn will charge the battery, once this is full it will let all the excess charge into the leisure battery.

You may still have the winter pack as most people convert the second starting battery into a leisure battery set up,

Have you tried it without the air filter yet as per previous post?

You need to establish whether it is white smoke or steam, very different things with very different causes.

Does it smell paraffinny or does it smell "wet".

new word of the day

"paraffinny"

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/paraffinny

grab coat and run for cover.

back on track
you say you havnt lost any coolant at all but have lost some power, we had a turbo fail on us we lost power and had white smoke out of the back but that was all the time and we were losing coolant.

im still looking at it being glowplug related as you say it stops when engine is warm. however that dosnt explain power loss unless there is something blocking the air intake as mentioned before. or the valve in the exhaust as in the winter packs

I do have a button like the one described, but mine has a picture of a fan on it, i thought that might be for the rear air con of something? What does a winter pack do anhway?

AS for the power loos il tell you all the story from start to fin in a nutshell:

A few weeks earlier, i had a full service, everything was fine thena week later a loss of power occured, no turo and only revvs up to 1000, so i did almost 5mph all the way to the garage. When i got there, we couldnt figure out the problem, do he took off the fule filtler only to find it was full of CXXp. So replaced it, put purge stuff in the tank and ran the engine on high revvs for a little while and it seemed to clear, then everything was fine again. Until the following week whe my van wouldnt start all all, turned out he glow plug relay had gone, so put another one in.

Everything was fine again, but everytime i cold start now i get a juddering and whitesmoke, so last week i changed the glow plugs themselves, only to find the older ones where perfect. grrrrr #-o

So now im at a loss, im going to start the van in a min, to see if i have that button and turn it off.

As for the air filter, its a new one only been in a few weeks....... :?

if you dont have the button with the picture of an engine on you wont have the winterpack.

The button you discribe is the rear aircon, if you dont have the climate control.

If the fuel filter got clogged up, then no doubt the banjo filter is clogged as well, try taking that out and cleaning it.

theres a fact sheet in the members area on how to do it its easy

Are you still on the same tank of fuel as you were when the problems started?

Gaza69 wrote:Hi guys,

I have white smoke when the van is cold started and a pooping sound coming from what seems like the enginebay and the van bounces while it pops.

Now looking through here I found that it was probably the glow plugs so i got a new set of ngk's only to find that when instlled everything is still the same........ #-o #-o

im confused now and unsure what else it could be. Has anyone else had this issue?
Maybe you've got sh*te in the tank? sorry
Maybe I was right after all, may be worth running it from a known clean supply, ie disconnect the fuel pipe going into the filter from the tank & suck the fuel from a jerry can full of fuel you know is clean & ok. Elimniates the possibility if nowt else.

I was just checking the faq on smoke it has some of the reasons for the various smoke types but not many self help actions that might be tried by the owner gaz69 has had a lot of replies to his post and I think that someone with diesel engine nouse could update the faq to include a "What to do section" on a separate page not putting myself in the frame my job is electronics, thoughts anyone?

Sounds daft but are you waiting long enough for the glowplug light to go out? I unarm the immobilisor, turn key to start glow plugs, by time I've put seat belt on starts fine. If I start the engine prior to this routine it tends to "knock" around a bit until it fires up after a couple more seconds.

Banjo filter is a little fuel strainer after the fuel filter.

Sounds like glow plug problem to me (although I'm no expert).

ok,

so now i have replaced the glow plugs again and this time another relay and i still have the white smoke and popping noise. It doesnt smell sweet btw, its more erm....horrible??

I dont know what to do now, the mechanic i use said it could be overfueling, any idea??

My start up is as follows.

get into van early morning.
key in ignition, turning the plugs on twice to make sure they are up to heat.
engines starts...5sec and bang bang, white smoke white smoke. and a very slight sort of whistling noise.
Also if i try to move while the bang bang is going on, well, it wont move #-o

Any more ideas greatly appreciated!
