1st Gear Sticking. Manual gearbox

Post by Bon go north » Thu Sep 10, 2009 6:49 pm

Hi,

I have a manual 4wd Mazda Bongo SGL5 1996. I seemed to have developed a problem with 1st gear selection. When the gearbox seems to get hot I seem to develop difficulty selecting 1st Gear. I have no other problems with any of gears 2 to 5. I can select 1st gear when the engine is off or idling with no problems. I have thought about changing the gear box fluid and wanted to check if I was on the correct path. If so can someone tell me the correct fluid to get.

Cheers

Hi Andy, could the clutch be dragging a little?. Does the clutch feel 'spongy'? I have an auto, so have no idea if the clutch is hydraulic, from the Lush Projects diagram its hard to tell. If it is then the system might need topped up, or bled.
Possibly if there is old fluid in the system it might have water in it which starts to turn to vapour when it heats up. This means that when you push the clutch pedal down, the release mechanism at the clutch end doesn't move as far as it should, which means that the clutch doesn't fully open up, so it drags a little, making gear selection difficult. (Or, if its cable operated, it might need to be adjusted.)

Its always a good idea to change gearbox oil in any case, but I suggest checking the clutch first.

Have you had the bongo for long... the reason I ask is because if the wrong grade of oil has previously been used it can cause this problem.
Changing the gearbox oil is easier on a manual than an auto, and I can see you've got that one covered HERE.
