ECU information required

Following on (running in parallel actually) from the cooling system investigation, I have aquired from ebygum8, a second thermostat housing for testing, and on loan, an ECU.
As with the cooling system posts, I know absolutely NOWT about the ECU except that it has some sort of control over the cooling system fans.
I have taken a preliminary look and consulted the manual and have so far come up with the following.

- The ECU for a manual and automatic vehicles are different animals.
- There are 3 banks of terminal pins (automatic) and 2 banks (manual) which connect it to the vehicle - some pins are larger than others.
- from the manual, I see that Mazda have produced diagnostic 'boxes' for maintenance/fault finding purposes, and I see no reason that similar testing gear can't be replicated (probably for use by BF members)

Does anyone have any info which may cast some light before I go on a hunt?
or am I opening yet another can of worms?

That looks like half an ECU. There is a position for a 41-pin connector along the back edge that is clearly designed to connect to a second PCB. The processor number looks genuine, I just had a look on Google and it would seem to be a member of NECs 78F family. I'm not familiar with the NEC processors so I need to read up on them. From what year is this ECU?

I think the 41 pin connector on the back edge connects directly via cable looms to the various input/output devices rather than another pcb (just guessing ) The 41 pin connector is (was) also used by Mazda for diagnostic purposes.
Year? I'm not sure on that (could check if important) but I think 95/96

Probably due to the fact it is an Early one.......This was the era when vehicles started to have ECU's fitted and in some cases more than one per car unlike the more modern cars which tend to have a single Body computer which controls many functions from the engine through to EBD and ABS......

If the ECU pictured is from a diesel Bongo it probably only controls the EGR and the cooling fans........ happy to be corrected if I am barking up the wrong alley....
Now ........just been out and checked the ECU....mine is made by Jatco Corporation......who happen to make......Auto transmission, so add to the above......the auto box as well......

Yes, the ECU is from a diesel - actually, it belongs to ebygum38 so perhaps he could tell us the year.
And if you log in ebygum38, fear ye not, your ECU is being treated with the greatest of respect - I haven't had the angle grinder anywhere near it (as of this morning that is)

the Bongo autobox is a Jatco JR405E...... my ECU is a Jatco.....and I have a whole bunch of letters & numbers.....

Steve sent me some schematics as well. I can see that the ECU controls the EGR, the auto box and some motors? I was half expecting it to control the injectors and maybe the turbo too.
The use of a resonator rather than a crystal for the timing indicates that it doesn't control anything with a very fine degree of accuracy.
If the ECU is as simple as suggested then it would be far easier to put a new PCB inside the box than to reverse engineer the original. The question is what are you hoping to achieve?
Incidently, the main connector is made by Amp and is fitted to many Japanese ECUs.

James, as far as I can make out the ECU also controls the cooling fans (coolant and air scavenger), and for some strange reason, the front fog lamps feed from it

James: The question is what are you hoping to achieve?
No idea - sometimes I think I lost the plot, but basically I'm trying to find out how the cooling system works, and somewhere along the route, I was told that the fans, which are controlled through/by the ECU should be included - this now confirmed by dandy.
I was also looking through the workshop manual (ECU section) and it appears the Mazda folk use(d) a purpose built connector for diagnostically testing the ECU and the various input/output devices. This could be quite handy to have as it would nail problems far quicker. Another connector they use is a 3 way unit. This is connected between the original connector and the ECU with a 3rd leg going to multiple meters so that from the readings obtained, component condition could be tested. All the 'healthy' states are listed in the manual with 'what to do' lists attached. If we could build something on this line, imagine what the possibilities are. The gear could be passed from area to area and mini-meets set up where members could gather and give their Bongos a health check.

Widdowson, i'll stick my neck out & say ebygum38's is a 95.. I had a tail light off him, it's early old skool fer sure!!
