2.5 diesel engine hose question

Post by Boots » Mon Jan 18, 2010 10:46 pm

Hi All,

New member/poster here.
Just purchased my first Bongo, M reg, 1995(ish) 2.5 diesel.

Have searched this site and others including the lushman(?) files and unable to find exactly what I want.

View the engine from the drivers raised seat side.
At the front of the engine, almost under the gear selector, a lump (breather/filter?) with a number of pipes leading to/from.

At the bottom of the lump a large rubber pipe 1.5" approx? diameter leads down and towards the front of the vehicle.

The pipe held by a crossheaded jubilee type screw clip has come off, due to its possition I am unable to replace it fully and tighten the clip due to its location & large hands.

I would like to know: what the pipe is for as its blowing out oil and am I missing an obvious (but not to me) way to slide it fully on and tighten the clip.

Many thanks

You're not talking about the air inlet manifold are you? - http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... mgno=.html
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Morning Widdowson2008,

Many thanks for that, nice clean engine, was dreading trying to take a photo of the part!

The hose causing the problem fits to the bottom of A and is just visable behind B as it go's down and towards the front of the vehicle.

I await your advice.

All the best

Hi Missfixit,

Thanks for that link, I had viewed that diagram but was unshure that the bit on the front of the engine was the one I meant.

Cheers

That's the air inlet hose coming from the turbo via the intercooler. Some of the oil may be due to crap being chucked back in via the egr pipe that flanges onto the top of that elbow , easy enough to blank this off - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 43&t=14463
To reconnect it properly, can you not remove the jubilee clip & maybe flip it over so it's more accessible? it is a bu**er, but it can be done - or find someone with small hands, be easier if you warm up the hose with a hairdryer or something too, to make it a bit more pliable.
If it's chucking a lot of oil out, make sure you aren't overfilling the engine oil, won't do the turbo any good, may be worth taking off & cleaning out the intercooler & pipework too at some point, especially if it's had a load of oil going through it, mine was fairly gunged up when I did it.

Hi Kirsty,

Thanks for that.

I have studied the 'blanking off' info and will be looking to do that in the future if its not been done allready.

Back to the main problem. I managed to get that hose most of the way on and tighten the j/clip but after a 10 mile trip its off again.

Its the access, my hands are to big to get in and due to the oil its a dirty slippy job. I gather that their is no other access to the hose? if I can get it on and a new j/clip I had thought of drilling a hole under the seat for screw driver access then plug with a rubber bung.

Its getting in thats the main problem I need a small child with very strong hands.

All the best

May be easier unbolting the elbow to get better access then? Good chance to give it a bit of a clean out

Hi Again Kirsty,

It is looking that the long job will be a short job in the end and as you say its a good oppertunity to have a clean up.

Cheers for the advice.

Yep - that's my Bongo Mel. and Yep, at the time I took the photo the fluid level was low. That was my very first shufty at the engine. Steering fluid replenished immediately and no loss since.
It's nice to know people are watching your back - Thanks Mel. =D> =D>

Boots - sorry for pulling off topic slightly

A is air inlet elbow as it goes into the inlet manifold from the inter/aftercooler
B is the top coolant hose exiting the engine going to the top of the rad

Could not help noticing your power steering fluid level ?
Does it need a top up
