Split Charge Relay clicking

Post by thedogsbollox » Tue Mar 16, 2010 6:32 pm

When i start my motor after about 4 seconds the split charge relay clicks in then out about 3 or 4 times about half a second apart. Then it stays quiet. Is this normal or is something not right?
It seems to be more times after having sat for a while and maybe only doing it twice after running for a bit.

It's just doing what it's supposed to, if it's still doing after 10 minutes, you may have a problem.

I've noticed that if I put the starter battery on to charge, the split charge relay clicks on and off a few times before finally settling to on (green light constant), as opposed to when the engine is started and it clicks on first time. I presume that's because the charger begins the charging process slower than the alternator does. :?: Does a few clicks before settling on in this situation mean that the starter battery isn't getting as quick a charge boost as it should be from start up?

I don't have details of the VSR that is used on the Willinton kit but if the relay is clicking then it is pulling in then dropping out again. This is most likely caused when the charging load for the L/B causes the Alternator voltage to drop below the drop out voltage, then when the relay drops out, the voltage rises again and the cycle starts again and repeats until sufficient charge has got into the L/B to stop it pulling the voltage down so far. Normally the Pull in voltage will be set a bit higher than the drop out voltage (hysteresis) so that it doesn't happen to quickly or to often, as its not really desirable, this is sometimes adjustable but not always, usually just the Pull in voltage is adjustable and the drop out voltage is set a small fraction less than this.
