newbie bongo owner having some isses :(

Hey! I LOVE being a bongo owner - they're are such pleasures to drive I even got a wave off a bongo driver on my way up from devon yesterday.

Got a few teething problems half way up the journey. After some advice

1. When i decelerate down to a roundabout or into a service station etc the revs sometimes drops and becomes real sluggish and stalls, it doesnt happen everytime though.

2. Starting the engine, it sounds like a tank and the whole vehicle shakes. It seems to take a bit of time to want to start too. few seconds longer than other deisels i have had in the past.


Me car:

2.5td 1996
had a service and filters and oils changed last week.
It has come with 6 months warranty of upto£500 per claim.
I live up in Tyne and Wear - South SHields
Any advice?

2) mine starts "on the button".... Glow plugs okay?.....
Car..... you say filters......was that the fuel filter too?....

I agree with Mike about glow plugs.

Welcome tomheaney99. I agree with the above about hte starting thing (glowplugs etc.). I can recall at least two other similar incidents of Bongos behaving like this on the over-run but can't remembre the outcome. I thik the owners talked about coming off motorway sliproads etc. then having the engine stall. Have a search on her using keywords like 'motorway AND stalling' etc. to see if you can find the old threads, and how problem got sorted.

Welcome mate ~do'nt know where you bought Bongo from whether local or not~if reasonably local i'd take it back as you say you've 6 months warranty on it~~i'd be wary about operating on it yourself or the warranty could be void~it's easy to take it back when you've had a go then complain to the seller but some might be a bit awkward & not do the repairs ~well there my thoughts anyway

Agreed Ray, but it's useful to have some pointers to take to the dealer. Alas, I suspect the dealer is a long way away - possibly Devon.

hahahah how did you guess Devon? was a loong drive like! got home at 2.30am

Going to have a look at the banjo filter tomorrow, had a look at the factsheet - was impressed with the effort someone had gone to! the warranty doesn't cover wear and tear however i can take it to any garage if it's not w&t and get them to invoice company which is cool!

Ive got a tin top bongo. seems in ace nick apart from this fuel starvation thing,did it again once today but rest of time running real smoooth! Going to get myself to one of these bashes you lot seem to go to.

Oh last question too:

on the top of the bongo there small areials the size of pencils. 2 on each side of the vhichle at the back. any ideas what they're for? The radiao arieal is at the front.

The aerials you describe are for an accessory that has been fitted by a previous owner - most likely a tv.

They are indeed TV aerials and of no use in this country - I've got them on mine

yup, I've removed similar off a couple of bongos before (with their owners consent )

just to keep this updated incase others in future go through similar ordeal

researching similar problems the following have fixed them (after checkin banjo, filters etc etc etc)

1.new pump (expense)
2. new seals around pump
3. electric fuel pump fitted

ive booked mine in at a local auto diesel specialist to look for air getting into system first. (thanks for tip off from a user on here .

will hopefully know more next week. till then im stuck with takin journeys of less than 20mins duration doh!

Does anyone know what electric fuel pumps can be fitted to bongos? a guy on here did get one fitted but didnt say what size, type and what location and he hasnt been back on here since 2008.

I've not heard of this electric pump thing before and it sounds a bit likea 'sticking plaster' solution to me. But others may be able to comment.

Good luck with the garage and hope you get to the root cause without too much expense (make sure garage checks auto-electrical items like TPS and engine rev sensor (discussed as 'N sensor' on here recently - no idea if it would be relevant)

Update!

garage attached clear fuel pipes to see where air is in system. When warm air is being sent back from the pump itself.

He said could be an internal crack, seals, so suggested if could find a good value replacement then roll with that!

next stage. hunt down a pump!
