To make the bleeper less annoying poke a section of matchstick into the hole on the sounder.

It will sound a bit strangulated but much quieter.

was thinking maybe put tape or cover over it

Unfortunately it needs something more drastic than that.

Even with a matchstick rammed up it a lot of noise still gets out from behind/under the sounder. When I next get some non Acetic Acid based sealant that's my next move.
