Loss of power
Hi All,
Need some help.
Driving to work today and suddenly lost power, slowed right down with no warning at all, foot down and nothing, engine just ticking over. It picked up a again then lost power again. Stopped at set of lights then it seemed ok, got me to work.
Any ideas what it could be? will take it to garage but would like to have some idea what it could be.
Just finished my conversion inside so I hope it's not to serious.
Thanks
T

Re: Loss of power
If diesel, try small filter ontop of banjo on fuel pump
and fuel filter.
or clean change both as a matter of course.
can be ait ingress in system,so add a small clear tube b4 fuel pump to see if you have an air issue..

Re: Loss of power
I reckon you just have to start working through the possibilities. There's lots of chat on here about this kind of problem. Anything from what chipvan says through to blocked fuel lines, fuel filler caps that aren't breathing so allowing vacuum build-up, maybe something involving TPS (throttle position sensor) etc. etc.
Maybe start with loosening the filler cap for a test (cos its the easiest to do), then chipvans suggestions, then more involved checking of fuel feed.
One thing puzzles me. If its a fuel starvation problem, why is the engine not cutting out, but just returning to tickover. I'd be interested to hear what one of our techies has to say about that.

Re: Loss of power
Similar thing happened to me last year - a new fuel filter fixed it

Re: Loss of power
Sounds to me like fuel filter & banjo are first place to start, enough fuel getting through to tick over but restricting when any more is demanded, could also be the duff filler cap/breather scenario again as you say Mike, that's the easiest to check initially. Could also be something in the tank restricting the fuel pick up strainer, a quick blow back down the fuel line with some compressed air may sort that if it's the issue & you can't get to the sender plate under the floor of your nice new conversion

Hi All,
Thanks for suggestions.
Decided to take it to garage on way home from work, I have not got any time to check things myself and I'm not that good with when it comes to the engine side of things. I need it for next weekend as we are taking our first camping trip in it to test everything.
It drove OK to the garage but did not feel right, there was also a smell of fuel when we lifted the seat to have a look. There was also what looked like a fuel leak.
I changed the filter a cuple of months ago.
I do hope that I dont have to take out the conversion that would be a nightmare.
I'll be waiting for the dreded call from the garage tomorrow

Re: Loss of power
Could well be the seals on the fuel pump then, doesn't have to be a massive job, can be done in situ, there's a factsheet in the members area explaining how, may be worth printing out for the garage if it is that?
Wonder if it could be the fuel filter not sealing correctly? did you lubricate the seal with a bit of diesel before fitting? Could also be a fuel hose leaking a bit, supposed to be replaced every 4 years on the service shedule, most are running on the originals, in my case 15 years old
(Will be done very shortly having just done the ones on top of the sender.)

Re: Loss of power
Update.
Got bongo back from garage, they said they could not find what was causing problem. There is a small leak from fuel pump but this would not cause issue I was having.
I have done a few miles in it and it all seems ok now, maybe I was too quick to take it to garage, they charged me £100 for diagnostic work
I'll have a look at pump myself, I'm sure the there'll be a fact sheet to help me.
So our first trip is still on for next weekend, looking forward to the first sleep in it and to test everthing out it will be good to see if LB holds out for weekend with fridge, lighting,tv etc.....
Going to parkfarm in bodiam sussex, anyone been?
Happy bongoing

Done a quick search, the answer could be HERE (quite a long read though) if its combined with a flashing hold light - or maybe even if not.

Re: Loss of power
i recently had the same problem, 2 weeks ago, had to call aa to piggy back me home. next day removed filler cap and a big rush of air went in.started it without the cap and it ran fine. breather was blocked best guess, havnt tightened it up fully since and its working fine. could be that or check banjo filter or main fuel filter
