Just because the maximum speed is posted, doesn't mean that's the speed you have to drive at regardless but I agree it's annoying when someone is pootling along at 30 in a 50 or 60 zone holding up the traffic

Honda Type S - Warp speed (or at least pretty damn quick)

Bongo - Tourist speed (I just dawdle along admiring the view)

I really do find the bongo to be one of the most relaxing things I have ever driven, I am an aggressive stressy driver with no patience and I like to get to where I'm going as fast as I can but not when i'm in the van, maybe its the height thing but as I said I just dawdle


After a bit of needle tweaking my Speedo reads 3mph over, I think thats a good amount of tolerance but if you are adjusting it have your ignition on or 12v applied on the bench or you might as well be blindfolded

I totally agree sometimes you might not want to do 60 in a 60 zone, but if you chose to do that then you need to be aware of the vehicles behind, many of which will be driven by people at work with 'places to go' as it were. If one really isn't in a hurry & fancies a poodle around, then thats fine, but it isn't a problem to pull over now & again if you have all the time in world. Sadly the vast majority that tend to drive slowly wave two fingers to the rest of us, metaphorically speaking.

However it would be good around here to get up to the posted speed in a 30 or 40 zone.

Don't get me started on centre/right hand lane hoggers . . .

Thanks for the heads up on having the ignition switched on when adjusting the speedo needle. I wouldn't have thought of that.

I am running on brand new tyres, 195/70 front and 215/65 on the rear. The speedo actually reads about the same now as it did with the old rubber on.

Regarding tyre sizes and the speedo, if you fit larger tyres ( or new ones) you will actually go faster at any given RPM which, ( in my case where it is reading high), will make the speedo read nearer the true speed.

Quoting tyre sizes as "195" or "215" means nothing without the second number.

195/70/R15 = Width of tyre/Percentage of Width/Diameter of Rim

To make it interesting the first 2 numbers are in millimetres and the last one inches.

So, the above tyre has a tread width of 195mm and a tyre wall (the bit with the writing on) of 70% of that which is 136.5mm

If you do the same for a 215/65 tyre you get 139.75mm which, although not exactly the same is as near as makes no difference. Add in tyre pressures, a bit of wear and a lardy in the driving seat and they will all be a bit different anyway.

In essence 195/70 and 215/65 are the same diameter but the 215 is wider and lower profile.

How does being in an auto change what speed you are doing - or feel like doing??? I would guess the 12 - 16% of people who get done for speeding (camera's or otherwise) will have been driving automatics as that is appropriately the percentage of automatics on the road.

My Bongo is auto & it has been known to break most speed limits at some time or other!

Nothing I hate more than a long que of cars behind an ignorant dawdling driver that won't ever pull over to let the que past. Living in the super congested retirement area that I do those of us that want to 'get on with it' spend our lives in this situation. Why can people drive at the posted speed pleeeese. Or pull over every now & again as I used to do when driving my 1919 Model T - I usually ended up catching the que up again though with it!!

But, i'm not entirely convinced the sat nav is on the level either...?

Only when i size it up with the "law abiders" passing through the speed traps does it all seem to tally up on the mark?

Mine reads 8 mph low at 60 (actual speed 52 mph), as before checked against TomTom on a straight run with no hills.
I wondered why people were getting the hump with me when I was doing (I thought) 30 mph, my actual speed being 25 mph.

I put that down to the fact i'm in a automatic..? I fancy it's a different style to a gear shift driver.. If you are below the speed limit?? So what!

My reference was more about the chilled out style of driving an auto.. & If the injury to a pedestrian or other road user is lessened by the fact if was doing only 20 in a 30..?? So what!??
