I just used a 2p coin between the pipe and manifold in your second picture. Somebody else used a bi-metal(like a £1 coin) foreign coin, but it disintegrated and cost a fortune to put right

Re: is this correct egr blank places??
Should be ok if there are no leaks in the pipe/valve or at any of the welds. Fitting 2 plates is just belt & braces really, or if you know there's a leak in the system (leak to atmosphere rather than leaking through the valve)
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

If the valves worn etc, or it's smoking do this one (your photo): http://s723.photobucket.com/albums/ww23 ... egi005.jpg
