knackered engine (help)

Post by Benson » Thu Apr 22, 2010 5:56 pm

Hi All,

Need a bit of help again.

My Dad's bongo's engine is knackerd :( I think, hes not had it very long and has not even been anywhere in it yet.

He has had it pressure tested and there is no pressure on 1 and very low presure on the other 3 cylinders, it chucks out smoke and has no got much power and sounds awful.

How much would it be to put a new engine in it and can anyone recomend a garage that can do it, his garage won't do it(or can't).

Does it just need a new head or is is best to go for a reconditioned engine. He just wants it sorted out so it can be used for what it's ment for.

Hope someone can help.

Cheers

There are a few engines on evil bay, I looked on the net the other day out of curiosity and used a car parts search engine just to see what is about, I had a dozen e mails all offering engines varying in price from £600 to £900, there was a firm on e bay offering the full job, i.e supplying and fitting the engine, have a gander and see what you come up with, good luck.

I would enquire at somewhere like Discount Trucks in Newbury - there have been good reports of their work on here.

The low cylinder pressures could be a result of leakage past the valves (only the head needs looking at). Or leakage past the rings which could be just new rings OR worn bores which means a new (or re-bored) block.

Can you get to Croydon from your bit of Surrey, there's a bongo garage in South Croydon?

Hi

I had a 'knackered' engine shortly after buying my Freda on ebay! Thankfully I was able to buy a secondhand one from Bell Hill Garage http://www.bellhillgarage.com/ for £750 plus VAT with 89k. It was fitted by my usual mechanic with no problems. I have to say that the engine has been outstanding ever since. I would definitely purchase from them again.
