2000,Bongo Friendee,2.5d. Problem with the engine

Post by ggm74 » Thu Apr 22, 2010 11:50 pm

Hi there,I'm really happy that i became a member.
I've got a Bongo-2000,2.5 Diesel Friendy and I've got a problem.
I've checked it in two services-in the first one they couldn't find what the problem is,in the second one-Diesel Electro-Norwich-said the fuel pump and this could cost me £1000.But I'm still not sure what is the problem-when I'm driving in the city and there is traffic or traffic lights and the engine stop working (when i am on lower gear),then is very difficult to start again. But when the engine is cold it starts straight away.
If anyone got an idea, please write me.

Welcome dude. Don't panic yet. And that price sounds too high. There is an excellent Bongo specialist in Norfolk - Outback Autos. Try phoning them for a chat, plus do some searching and reading on here about similar probs that others have had. Good luck, others will reply soon and come back with any concerns.

Welcome to the forum :D
Has the fuel filter been changed? the fuel strainer (banjo filter) on the fuel pump? It could be crud in the tank blocking the pick up (blow the fuel line back through) or it could be the filler cap pressure release, try slackening off the filler cap & see if that improves it.

Check the back of the fuel pump for signs of seepage.

If there is diesel present it could be the O rings have perished and need replacing. A fairly straightforward job. O rings cost about £1-50p each and it's about an hour's work for someone with small hands.

Search for O Rings on this forum.

Your symtoms point to this as a possibility.

hi

i agree with harry

i had a very similar problem with my bongo when i had it, started getting the odd judder, occasional start delay, then discovered the leak !, you have to reach right around behind the pump then feel around, pull your hand out and look at your fingers, it may only look like an oilyness on your finger tips.
on my first investigation i thought ( nah that cant be leaking ! )

its unlikely that you will see any drips underneath the van, as i discovered it tends to just run down the engine and sit on the undertray.

and as for garages, i put mine into a local garage to fix ( i have used them for years and trusted them ) they had it for a day and advised they will need to totaly strip it down and send the pump off for reconditioning and its not gonna be cheap !.

in the end i got a fact sheet off bongofury, ian advised me where to buy the seals from ( cant remember off hand ) got the new seal and fixed it myself, and all was well !, its a pig to get at , and i am sure mazda have mounted a cheese grater behind the pump, major hand chaffage, but a fairly simple fix.

enjoy

if it is any help I had this problem

It wasnt the usual seals on the pump but air was gettin into the pump somehow. attatched clear fuel pipes and could see the air!

Replaced the pump with a used one (100quid) and sorted it.

That'll be the newer fly by wire pump - there's been a lengthy thread on here recently by bergera (sp) with similar (ish) problems
