air horns

my horns were on there last legs ,so i bought and fitted some small air horns, now my friend tells me they are illegal .

after all that work ????

now these are not the big lorry type , which sit on the roof etc (truck on baby etc)

and they are not the sort that play tunes.( stupid kid on the block )

so if they are illegal why are they still selling them ???

can someone please clarify the situation

You mustn't have a horn which wakes the driver in front up, nor makes a loud noise, from the look of it!!!!
So...what's a horn for....????...I have a switch-over device....so that my exceedingly loud compressor horns actually DO warn....and I'm on the hunt for a nice set of train horns at a good price.....loudness may be illegal, but it has saved my bacon once!

If both horns play the same note that's not two-tone. My friend has air horns fitted to his motorbikes and they're legal.

Correct me if I am wrong but the way I interpretate it is if they both sound at the same time its ok, not one after the other. the reason I say this is my original jap horns ( that I swapped for my current air type horns ) were also two tone but one relay meant they both sounded together. Kirsty will no doubt join in on this post as she has changed hers. Colin

I've got triple air horns and they are perfectly legal, as long as they all blow together i.e one note only

That's right, one note (tone) is OK, 2 are not. We have dixie air horns on ours in addition to the standard horn. The standard horn keeps us legal for the MOT and the air horns operate off a seperate switch, just for fun.

mine operate together, but the actual horns are different lengths, to form two different tones ,so its actually two tones but running together to form a single note .

i think what the law means is that they must not operate alternatly, and so sound like an emergency vehicle.

anyway ,having fitted them ,i thought well give them a try just to see how much louder they are than the standard ones,
gave it a two second bust wow ,loud, very load,
then tried again ,went for one second ,then nothing , think i,ve blown a fuse , now the problem starts, where is the fuse ,and what amp rating is it , lush diagrams are not much good to me as they just confuse me.

so can someone please say , under the bonnet RH side , pink box, 50amp or where ever and what ever the fuse is .
(yes i know the box is not pink ,or 50 amp, just trying to give example )

Mine are not air horns, but they are two tone & play together... No problems with the MOT.. But that's cuz it's a diminished third.. The interval produced by flattening a minor third by a chromatic semitone in equal temperament it is enharmonic with the major second.. I think??

That is correct.
Are there actual variances therefore in intervals used for horns (air, not French!). If so, I would go for a perfect 4th myself, or a major sixth as an alternative. Can anyone who has already fitted some comment on what interval theirs play at all?

ok francophile sorted me out on the fuse, but now i find that each horn has an individual power supply, so is this two separate circuits, or two relays , or what ????

on this one even a lush circuite diagramm would be good

can anyone help, i,ve got to get this sorted.

i do,nt care if its in beethovens 7th in b flat minor played on a banjo as long as i get it working??
