V6 Oil Leak

Post by BongoBonkers » Wed May 19, 2010 9:21 am

Hi

Whilst changing the oil recently I have noticed a small oil leak on our V6. It seems to be coming from the area above the alternator. Does anyone know what the unit is directly above the alternator and whether it's a common source of leaks? It is belt driven.

Any other V6'ers got a similar problem? It's not enough of an oil leak to drop the level or even mark the drive or I would've noticed it before - hence one of my options is to look the other way and ignore it - but I'd like to sort it if I can as the engine's always been nice and clean.

Cheers, Dave

Pretty sure that only really applies to diesels?
The leak isn't the camshaft seal is it? common issue with the V6.

I haven't heard of a leak from that area, and my own looks fine there. We do have a suspected leak from the Cam shaft seals and several others seem to have that problem, very small amounts but it runs down the front of the engine and then back along the engine until it drips on the hot exhaust and causes a nasty hot oil smell. Next time I have the seat up I'll have a check and take some more photo's as well. the photo below was back in Nov 2008 (Click for fullscale image);

ImageI get a small drop of oil forming where the arrow is and it eventually drips onto the alternator think its the rocker gasket.

You might want to look at causes rather than symptoms, see this thread: http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 6&start=30

The garage have had mine for 9 weeks now and still can't resolve the leak.

There is a power steering pump in that area, which can leak.
On the V6, an oil leak from the camshaft seals / front crank oil seal is not uncommon. I've seen several of these. Oil leaks can cause other problems.
Keep in mind the oil can leak onto the cambelt.
It can find it's way past the power steering pump/bracket, down to the alternator. If too much oil drips into the alternator, it will also fail.

As well as make the cam belt fail if it's covered in oil.

8) You do need to keep an eye on oil leaks.
