driver's door check strap prob

Post by ronhud » Sat May 22, 2010 10:56 pm

I had my driver's door slightly open when a large lorry shot by and the wind slammed the door into the fully open position. Now when I open the door there is a loud thump from what I think is called the door checker ( a metal strap from pillar then through a slot in the door). Anyone else had this and any suggestions as to how to fix it. If it means removing the door card I could use some guidance on this. A search on the forum provided a link as to how but the link is no longer available.

Removing the door card how to is on the factsheet on fitting remote central locking, may be worth having a look around on lushprojects to see if it shows what you need.
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Thanks for the fact sheet direction Kirsty. I had found an illustration and part no on lush projects, I am hoping that something has not been damaged on the checker fixing inside the door. I'll take the card off tomorrow and see. I've also got failed window raising/lowering - that came on gradually, sometimes it worked and sometimes not so it looks like it might be the loom problem as described extensively on the forum.

Could be the loom, or the switch itself, as mine was, but it's a good time to track the fault if the door card's coming off anyway.

I had a similar problem years ago with the "Door check strap" thing on a Vauxhall combo van...
It used to groan & clonk about half way open... I greased the unit & it was fine ever since!

Hope this helps..?
Cheaper by comparison to a race horse...

The groan is coming from me - the thump is like a gunshot!

Hi Ron,

Have a look at the gap between the door and the wing, the door might be catching the wing when you open it.

It could sound like a 410.. :)

Rita you are right, that is what is happening. I've started a new thread re how to adjust the hinges but any advice on fixing is welcome.
