speedometer is stuck and eratic
Driving along I have realised my speedometer is not working properly - it is stuck on 50 miles per hour but the trip and mileage recorder appears to be turning round and recording sensibly.
What do I do to fix this?

Re: speedometer is stuck and eratic
It may just be the possibility that the speedo dial needle tip could be catching on the dial face & not able to sweep up & down??
I had a similar problem when the dial was first changed to MPH... It would go up to 50 alright then stick, then grudgingly drop back when down to about 20/30.. or it would stay at 50 till i touched 70, then it was OK..? If you see what i mean...!?
You will need to remove the clear dial cover to check this...

Re: speedometer is stuck and eratic
I had exactly this recently - I changed the face to an MPH one and a few weeks later it buckled up very slightly, enough to catch the needle. The solution, which took about ten minutes start to finish was to remove the instrument unit, squirt a little super glue behind the speedo face, hold it down flush for a few seconds so it remained flat, then refit everything. Been fine ever since.

How do you remove teh clear dial cover? I don't want to do something silly here - but yes, I agree it could be sticking.
Annoyingly the importers changed the dial over to miles per hour and he is now claiming it is out of warranty but he must havehandled that part and nothing else so I hold him responsibly and he is now telling me that i need to pay him to sort it!
But if you can tell me how to remove the dial cover i can have a look myself - thanks

Unclip the top part of the steering cowl.. Remove the four screws... See diagram... http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... mgno=.htmlma woo wrote:How do you remove teh clear dial cover? I don't want to do something silly here - but yes, I agree it could be sticking.

There are four, (two not shown in the pic) two underneath & two above the pod screen.
Here is the dial pod... http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... mgno=.html 55-448A is the clear dial cover. You should be able to unclip that with the pod in situ..?
In fairness, the peeps you got it from could out of courtesy sort it for you it wouldn't cost nothing..!

Re: speedometer is stuck and eratic
Jaylee's right - but if you find it easier to remove the entire instrument pod it's just two mor screws then two plug connectors to un-plug, or at least that's how mine was - it really was surprisingly easy!

I would air on side with Dan..! It could be a bit of a fiddle if the pods not removed & you can see the tabs/clips that hold the clear screen in place if it's pulled out.danboy99 wrote:Jaylee's right - but if you find it easier to remove the entire instrument pod it's just two mor screws then two plug connectors to un-plug, or at least that's how mine was - it really was surprisingly easy!
Dan; you may have two screws missing holding the actual dial pod in place?? There should be 2 at the top & 2 at the bottom.. The white pod casing has four lugs the screws fix through..

Thanks - probably my poor memory, but sadly I'm the sort of person who'll probably go and check!

Re: speedometer is stuck and eratic
Thank guys - well I think it is temperature related cos when its hot the needle sticks more. The issue is do I drive to Worcester where I got it from? Or do I attempt to sort it myself. Its the distance to go if it is a simple fix then a lot of petrol money wasted...
A dilemma as usual! Hopefully I will find someone local to help..

Re: speedometer is stuck and eratic
Yes - it probably is heat related - if it's the same problem I had then the face will buckle up more when things warm up.
No dillema though - all you need is 1 screw driver, some glue, and ten minutes - a no brainer if you ask me.

If you do not fancy sorting this out yourself, there are quite a few Bongo knowledgeable garages in Hampshire for a small job like this. Much cheaper than a journey to Worcester.
Discount Trucks, Berkshire but near Newbury for the north and Southern Bongos in North Baddersley for the south come to mind.

Re: speedometer is stuck and eratic
Just VERY occasionally, i spot out of the corner of my eye the speedo fly up to around 50MPH whilst pulling away from stationary... Then the needle slowly glides back down to the actual road speed
I've always put this down to the speedo chip fitted to my bongo. It happens so infrequently though that i've never investigated it further.
