coolant temperature question

just a quick question to put my mind at rest.

I'm new to these Bongo thingies but so far I like it

I had to put a new head on it and it has been bled and run and doesn't overheat.

So, my temperature gauge shows 3/4 of the way around to the red when it is running at 85-88 degrees, I know this as I have a temperature probe placed in the bleed hose as close to the engine as it can go which is linked to my digital stat which is calibrated to 100 degrees for work.

So what is Hot, as the system is pressurised I am assuming that it is above 100 degrees?

The radiator fan seems to cut in just above 90.

Also, when should the engine bay fan come on?

If you are using a standard unmodified gauge any reading is meaningless as the needle just sits in it's "normal" position across a huge temperature range.

If you have a standard gauge and it is reading past the vertical (12 o'clock)
position ....I would say it is running very hot.....Normal is just before the vertical.....Temp sensor in the bleed pipe ???coolant does not circulate through this pipe so the reading will be lagging behind actual engine coolant temp....can you not get it into the top hose where it exits the cyl head ??
The standard gauge reaches the 11 o'clock (normal) position at about 60C, it sits there untill the temp reaches about 110C....then it swings across very quickly and you overheat.
If you have a Mason alarm fitted or have done the free gauge mod (see free download from web shop below) then all the above is not applicable.
