EGR.

Post by lars » Sun May 30, 2010 11:04 pm

I've had oil staining at the offside front of the head area of my 2.5 diesel for a couple of years now which I took to be a slight cylinder head leak, but whilst browsing the forum came across a thread which seemed to suggest it may be EGR gunge causing the mess. Two questions, firstly, what exactly does the EGR do? and secondly will fitting a blanking kit stop the gunge (assuming the diagnoisis is correct) with no detrimental side effects, in other words if I can do without it, why is it there in the first place?

Egr FAQ here that should explain it - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 43&t=14463
The blanks may reduce the oil staining/leaks, but some of it (on mine anyway) is due to oil vapour from the rocker cover breather being sucked into the air intake, I've just ordered a catch tank to see if it makes any difference, I did my egr nearly 3 years ago I think & still get a degree of oil coming through.
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

the egr's job (exhaust gas recirculation) is to recirculate exhaust gas back into the inlet air system and reburn again, this cleans up the emissions for japan(very strict) the emissions for britain are not as strict so strictly speaking its not needed.if you want to blank it off in theory it should run sweeter on new virgin air than used air.
