Starter battery
Can anyone please advise me of the cold start ampage needed from a battery to start a 2.5 diesel. I had my battery tested at Halfords today and they have advised if it's 500amps or below it's ok, if it's 600amps or above it's done for.

Re: Starter battery
If you need a new battery I'd strongly recommend paying a litle extra and getting a 95Ah battery or thereabouts. Dandywarhol ( one of our gurus) said recenlty that cold cranking deamnd can be 500 amps or so. Then of course the battery has to maintain voltage to the glowplugs while cranking (if its a diesel engined model). So its worth having a battery with some poke on a biggish beast like the Bongo engine. If yours is a 2.0 litre petrol, I guess you might be fine with less (say 75Ah) but even so, given you may be camping and using the radio while parked up etc. I'd go for a powerful battery.Tolle2 wrote:Can anyone please advise me of the cold start ampage needed from a battery to start a 2.5 diesel. No idea what those Halford's figures refer to, but mine's a 90Amp/Hr with 800Amp cranking power.

Re: Starter battery
See if there is a local motor factor with a trade counter locally....... your battery will be 1/2 price to that of Halfords.....
You want an 068 or a 249 - the 249 is the more powerful should you think you need it.....
I have a Yuasa 068 equivalent...(030) and my engine starts on the button....no lengthy cranking....

Went to Battery Specialist (NW), web site in previuos post, this morning, satarter battery had it but alternator OK. Bought a replacement Exide 249 100a/h £95.00 fitted, staff really helpful I would recommend them if you are in the market for a new battery.

Re: Starter battery
Good decision - plenty of oomf in a battery of that rating and £95 fitted doesn't sound bad to me for the convenience and peace of mind shuld there be any warranty issuesTolle2 wrote:Went to Battery Specialist (NW), web site in previuos post, this morning, satarter battery had it but alternator OK.
