Looking for the link that shows how to fix faulty earth on fuel sender.
Non Member so cant access fact sheet.

Easy to do, slide middle seats forward, rear ones back, grab hold of carpet near offside window, pull like hell, it will come away exposing metal cover, unscrew cover, there you are, clean and make second earth as failsafe. Hows that,lol.

or simply earth the fuel tank -

the fuel guage is a simple fix, lay under drivers side,just behind drivers door,you'l see the bank above your head, there is a large 'lip' that runs around the tank from the 2 halves being joind, simply drill/screw a connection into the lip and fix the other end to the body work,i use the 10mm that holds piping etc takes 5 mins to do.

Havent tried 321's version but that seems soo much easier and simpler to do, good un guys.

If our factsheet is to be believed, this may not work if the electrical (earthing) connection between the connector block and the sender unit has detiorated and is causing the gauge fluctuation. In that case, you'll have to go down Davids route I think (but others will correct me if I'm wrong about all this). I found I didn't need to pull the carpet like hell, just loosen off the plastic floor trim strip by the boot opening that the carpet is held by, then start pulling it up from there. I proceeded with caution, as I felt just pulling it hard could result in it tearing somewhere. I removed the seat runner rear end caps to make it easy for the carpet to be peeled back around there. I used the wooden pit prop approach to keep the carpet up and out of the way so I could remove the fuel tank inspection hatch. When I'd provided the sender with a new earth direct from the connector block to the floopan, getting the carpet back under the side panels properly took a bit of patience and perseverence (I levered the panels up and out a bit to help using an old triangular ended paint scraper) to help me tuck the carpet under, and worked my way along like that. It should all be obvious when you do it.

The tank earthing method is used by 321 Away & Bongobits, Freewheeler fixed his using that method, so it just seems to be a matter of earthing the tank fixes it, worst case scenario, you've wasted 5 minutes of your life If I had access to mine I'd disconnect the earth wire just to try the earthing method to see if it does the same.

We could really do with updating the factsheet and save people a lot of wasted time IMHO. The first I heard this approach mentioned on here was from 321 only a couple of weeks back. Its frustrating too as I had wondered right from the beginning if there wasn't a simpler way to repair the poor earth but having been advised by the great and the good of how to do it (i..e. as in the 'factsheet', which as I said recently might be more accurately renamed the 'howidunnit' sheet). Hey ho, it wasn't actually that much extra work and at least I know I now have a new earth that runs from source to chassis.

Factsheets are put together with the knowledge available at the time, they are constantly being updated & I'm sure this will be added to it in time, it only came to my knowledge in the last few weeks too, then it was backed up by Julian saying he did it, adding validity to the idea.
I'd imagine Ian is a bit busy right now getting ready for the Bash. As it says on all the factsheets, if you know of any errors, omissions or updates, let Ian know (or words to that effect) Don't assume he'll pick up on every snippet of info, or that someone else will do it, if you think it's worthy of going on a factsheet, make sure it does by emailing Ian Alternatively, if it bugs you that much, you could maybe volunteer to keep them up to date?

If I was retired, I'd love to. Unfortunately, I'm very busy with work, family and other commitments like Scouts (posting on here is 'me' time, snatched when I can, though I still try and contribute to the knowledge base that way). I'll try and bring this up at the AGM. If no-one else will do it, and if I get desperate enough, I may even offer to do an editorial job (I think those wot have dun it, rather than me, are the best person to write a specific factsheet) ) as and when I get time and if I can be given he tools and permissions to do it. But it would be so much better if someone who has leisure time, could use an interest, and wants to see a worthwhile job done, could do it. There's a lot of good raw material there - it just needs knocking into shape a little.
