Side door Central Locking Actuator problem?

Post by aquabongo » Sat Jun 12, 2010 11:54 pm

Hi,
After reading a few posts on the central locking issues I've discovered an issue with my side door. I have taken the door apart from the inside and removed the actuator. It would seem that it is faulty as it does not move with the same force as the others. It merely tickles the mechanism occasionally. I am assuming the motor in the actuator has a problem. Has anyone seen this before?
Thanks in advance.

Andy.

Do you mean the sliding door ? Might be worth checking that the contacts are clean (only 3 out of the 5 are used), a light brush with bit of sandpaper would be best.

Thanks Geoff,
Yes, the sliding door. 've tried cleaning the contacts. Tracing the wiring I note that it's not the lowest contact but the two next up from the bottom. I have tried applying a separate 12v supply to these contacts and also to the connector between this and the actuator and get the same result. I have stripped down the actuator and applied a supply to the motor and it does not respond as expected, so seems the motor has an issue. I've emailed BongoBits to see if they have a replacement. I guess I could fit an after market one (I'm intending to fit remote C/L soon) but it would be simpler to jut find a replacement unit.

Jst looking at your handle - are you a Radio HAM my any chance?
Thanks,
Andy.

I am indeed, the callsign just makes a very handy User ID, as it tends to be unique ;-)

Yup a replacement from a breaker would be best, if its trying to move it sounds like the coil might be OK but just need lubrication, but not having seen one in the flesh as it were not sure how easy it would be to get it apart, cleaned and lubricated.

Just thought i'd add!
I found that door actuators tend to like a short pulse to operate!?
I was resetting my aftermarket alarm to lose the chirp, working my way through the menu & accidentally set the pulse to a long jolt for the pneumatic type...? So i had to replace the two wire aftermarket actuator fitted to work the CL on remote!

Perusing the alarm manual afterwords suggested that's what i had done, fudged my actuator! #-o

£5.95 is a hard lesson to learn!
Cheaper by comparison to a race horse...

Thanks - yes, looks same issue. I've taking it a part - just a motor with a wormdrive which locates into a cog with a cam on it that moves the lever to push the lock mechanism. There is a spring to pullthe cog back to centre afterwards. I would guess that if a constant supply were applied, the motor would drive the mechanism to the end of the same, then burnout the windings when it stalls at the end stop.

I'll call BongoBits in the morning to get a replacement - sooner I cover up that aweful black gue again the better

Then Ican start to plan the more interesting projects - some need Wireless C/L kits around that I'm itching to get my mits on :D

Hmm,
Replacement is £20 + VAT from BongoBits. That's better than the £40 + VAT quoted before the sharp intact of breath!

I think once I have the door backand working I will look at sourcing a replacement motor to go into the actuator. Atleast theatwill allow easy fitting as the actuator body would be the same...

Just to say I fitted the new actuator a couple of days ago and all working a treat now :D.
Bongo went in for a full service. Also cam belt change (not sure it was done) an waxoyled by Spanners & Jacks. Engine sounds sweet - just a minor oil leak to fix on the inlet manifold when the new gasket is in and think she is all sorted for a while [-o< .
