Steel seal- did it work?

Post by Mountain » Mon Jun 14, 2010 7:12 pm

So, second head gasket gone in 3 months of ownership.

I simply cannot afford another head gasket replacement so I have 2 choices.

1. Sell bongo on the cheap with head gasket gone.

2. Try steel seal. Hope it lasts long enough for me to save up to get Bongo fixed.

So any tales of steel seal before I attempt it?

Did it work?

Does it block up the radiator/ heater matrix?

How long did it last?

Hi mountain, a few peeps on here have resorted to 'steel seal' and have had good results, for the money i think its worth a try £30. Do a search and you'll find loads of info.

Good luck

Well, I've not really got anything to lose. Pity all but one of my leaks happened after the head gasket was changed

I've done a bit of searching but just wondered what the success rate.... or lack of is.

Pretty sure the HG has gone but not in a major way like the first time....coolant squirting out at the join to the head.

This time the coolant is getting pressurised and being forced out of the overflow. The oil filler pipe is also breathing but curiously no 'mayonnaise' in the oil.

might be worth a check, the rocker cover breather may be blocked it should chuff!! or the air inlet side compromised in some way.if this is blocked the oil side could get overheated, causing excess heat to build up in the coolant side.

Hi Mountain,

In the past & with cars, I had good results with 'wonder weld' not £30 a shot about a tenner.

I have sealed h/gaskets with it and all was well for a long time.

I always put it in via a pipe not into a header tank or radiator if possible when the engine was cold so it circulated and went into the leak area before setting. Then go for a run, in a Bongo a long one.

Often I used only about half of the bottle or less if it was a leak from ? unseen. Less in is less to gum things up.

Good luck
