Wheel sizes for Ford Freda
Hi All,
I need to buy some wheels for my Ford Freda and have no manual. Does anyone know what the standard size of wheel and tyre is and what's the best ones to buy? are they a standard Mazda wheel.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks Bongoers!

Re: Wheel sizes for Ford Freda
I had issues when I had the same size wheels fitted all around, The vehicle on moving away would judder.
My brother in law who works for Ford states that some of the 4x4 fredas have a sensitive drive train and they need the correct size wheels on them.
I've got the correct size on now and no issues.
Not wanting to confuse any issues,

PCD: 5x114.3 / ET: 40-45 / BORE 67.1 (The same as a Mazda RX8)
15" tyres as standard but 17's and 18's are more popular (I have fitted 17's)
Tyres for 15"
Front: 195/70 R15 92S
Rear: 215/65 R15 96S
(most go for 215's all the way round)
I fitted these tyres for my 17" Alloys:
225/50 R17 98W XL (size to keep same diameter as originals and 98W XL to be 'insurance' safe)
Hope this helps

Re: Wheel sizes for Ford Freda
Standard wheel size is 15" with tyre sizes 195/70/15 Front and 215/65/15 Rear. I believe a possible factory fitted variation is tires of 195/80/15 Front and 215/70/15 Rear. Air pressure 2.0 Front 2.4 Rear.
Mine has the smaller sized tyres, cheap remoulds that I believe are causing judder.
I've been told that judder can be due to the carcase of the tyre degrading deforming the shape of the tyre and so making it impossible to ballance properly.

Re: Wheel sizes for Ford Freda
That would make sense about the impossible balancing as I have had 2 different wheel balances and both very different.
Would you suggest trying new tyres all round instead of changing all the wheels? Only thing is these alloys are wider than the standard wheel.

If they are "smaller" do they have the correct load index?Mark Norton wrote: Mine has the smaller sized tyres, cheap remoulds that I believe are causing judder.
92 or more front and 96 or more rear?
If not, you have more than judder to worry about.

When you say the wheels are "wrong" what do you mean?fidel21 wrote:That would make sense about the impossible balancing as I have had 2 different wheel balances and both very different.

Do they fit on the hubs properly and if the centre bore is too big do they have spigot rings fitted?
Someone else a while ago had balance problems, but once they got the correct spigot rings fitted so the the wheels gripped the hubs properly it went away.
The wheels must be properly centred on the hubs, NOT just located by the studs.

Re: Wheel sizes for Ford Freda
The wheels are alloys inherited from the former owner, I have fitted spigots, which all fit perfectly, so all wheels are centered ok, the wheels are very wide, and when I get over 60 the whole van shakes. My mechanic took it for a spin and said you have the wrong wheels. You need the right sized ones.scanner wrote:When you say the wheels are "wrong" what do you mean?fidel21 wrote:That would make sense about the impossible balancing as I have had 2 different wheel balances and both very different.

Or new tyres, these may be bad remoulds.
I'll post some pics later.
I guess I am trying the wheels first!

Re: Wheel sizes for Ford Freda
Same problem at 60mph with mine, as the inherited 15" alloys are corroded with rubbish tires I've bought some RX8 18" alloys in very nice condition for £180. Also some good part worn continental tyres. I am waiting for delivery on the tires, but I hoping this will cure the shake.
By the way it's an extra £100 on the insurance for the RX8 18" Alloys!

Re: Wheel sizes for Ford Freda
Nothing wrong with that tyre size as it is the standard size for the rear axle as stated the fronts should be 195/70-15 but many use 215 front and rear to make carrying a fullsize spare easier and with no problems at all. Also those wheels don't look "too wide" to me - plenty have wider than that without problems.fidel21 wrote:Ok, the tyres in question are.

I think your tyres are more likely to be the problem.
