just to clarify whats been going on if you dont mind baz.
the bongo has been runing hot for some time, poping two hoses in the process, the top of the stat has been unable to shut off the port at the top of the housing, probably lazy/old/copy stat.
this has caused the bongo to run slightly hotter than it should.therefore hoses poping.
repaired with new mazda stat.clean port so it can now close on the metal to metal seal, temps now under control.
great pics by the way baz.
go on i am tempting fate but how is it running now?

No offense intended. And, I'm all for changing thermostat in any vehicle that is showing any symptoms of overheating, especially our temperamental babies. And of course no harm can be done, and no harm done by cleaning out the housing.

But, Ady, as I say, no offence intended, but are you sure your explanation of the job of the thermostat is right? Metal to metal seal at the top? Shut off the port at the top? Are you sure?

Most certainly a tired or defective thermostat can cause overheating, but I'm not convinced of this explanation. I'd be happy to give my version, but like I say, I'm trying to avoid causing offence.
My dear chap, I have had the same problem for years.
I personally would welcome your view! 8)

I await with an open mind.

All opinions are welcome :D I'd be interested to hear yours :D
Personally, I & many others agree with the scenario as described by NB, it was arrived at with a lot of input from different people & from measurements of the stats operation & hands on tests/observations, etc, couple of interesting threads here

bongo nads just go for it,its a long way to come and argue
im learning just like everyone else.id be glad to put any other blocks in the wall, who knows one day we may have a house 8)
my knowledge has only been gleened from the information on here, good though it may be,we only know what we know.
i have worked now on approx 2o diferent bongos, half of those had severe top end temp issues, all were (saved) from self destruction, the thing it keeps coming back to primarily is the stat.everything else has to be ruled out though, rad, pump, etc.
but if you know any diferent im all ears.you seem to have a diferent way of looking at things, and that is usually good for all.
one more thing please stop being polite, its annoying
