If the rad fan/s kicked in at 94, did they bring the temp down? - may have risen by a degree or two first with lag, once the fans kick in, increase the revs, this will force more coolant through the rad therefore cooling it quicker if the stat is working, if it carries on rising, then chances are the stat ain't working proper (of course it could mean you've got a blocked rad). I used Holts 2 part rad flush & as Ady says make sure it's thoroughly flushed out, that means bleeding it up to & beyond stat opening temp to make sure everythngi gets flushed several times. I did mine with the stat out so everything was open.![]()
It might be a safer bet for me to put it into a bongo garage and have them drain, flush and refill the system and whilst it's there get a pukka Mazda stat fitted too?

I ran the engine up to temperature the fan cut in at about 93, but that is with the sensor in the "wrong" place. At least I now know the fan is working. Next Saturday I will fit the new stat and change the coolant, this was supposed to have been done before I bought the bongo, it looks good and I have no reason to doubt the dealer but I do not know what type is in there and anyway it will be good practise to do it at home for the first time and not in a field after a leak. I may flush the system if it looks like it will do some good, if not I will just replace the coolant. It would be good to take the bongo camping, and not apart, at the weekend, for a change.

Just came back from a day out at Snetterton.....footie not my bag..... I believe Englandshire lost....
Anyway....just caught up with this.... I came back at 60-70 mph with the ambient reading at 30C at Snet and 28.9C when we got home....... Mason modded gauge to 55/60%..... max (12:30 to 1pm approx in pre Mason pictorial speak)
For me as your getting quite hot....I personally would (if funds allow) go the extra mile....fit a new Rad as well as flush & Thermostat... since I replaced my Rad, Bongo runs sooooo much cooler...
