strange "rubbing" "whirring" noise when I turn towards left
We have noticed that when the steering wheel is anything at all towards the left, there is a noise coming from the front wheels. I (as the driver) think it is coming from the passenger side, other half tho says its coming from drivers side. it sounds like a washing machine when the spin starts up or like the wheel is rubbing on something.
Any ideas o educated ones????

Is yours a 4WD Bongo - might be related to CVs / driveshafts if so?randombit wrote:We have noticed that when the steering wheel is anything at all towards the left, there is a noise coming from the front wheels. Hi
Errr...Don't turn left
Seriously, what speeds, and can you induce this at low speeds. Can you try to do this with the passenger seat folded back to see if it is engine compartment, if you think it's one side, and the family think it's the other, it could be in the middle. Whilst the seat is back, can the co-pilot lean over and listen.
If it is at low speed, perform left lock while co-pilot stands outside and walks/ runs along.
we had the most bizarre noise a while back and located it this way.
To be honest it sounds like a belt or tyre noise, as it's not one we've heard before...alternatively, a stone in the brake caliper....caught between disc/ pad ?????
Cheers
Helen

cor that was quick.
it is at all speeds and the steering wheel only has to be slighlty off centre to induce the noise. willl test out all ideas 2mrw and let you know.
off topic but what is and how does "kickdown" work????

Turn the wheel to the left, get outside of the vehicle and see if the tyre is touching anything.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_transmission
This will explain automatics and a wee bit on kickdown.

Check your power steering fluid level - mine did that until I topped it up

What size tyres are you running?randombit wrote:gmaczbongo wrote:Turn the wheel to the left, get outside of the vehicle and see if the tyre is touching anything.

The reason I ask is because I placed 205 x 70 x 15 on my fronts, they look and handle good, but I had to pull the guard away from the wheel as every now and then they rubbed against the front underside of the bumper when going over a bump or on a sharp corner where you are turning full lock.
They will look alright when in a straight line position.
Let me know how you get on.
Cheers

no I havent, noise is only audible when going over 35ish mph, but you can sort of feel the noise as well, could it be the wheel bearings???

Allans Garage retired. Try PGS (Plymouth Garage Services) or Mayflower Auto Services Plymouth

From reading those I would say its gona be the bearings, it was my first thought as I remember having an old astra that made a similar noise. Am guessing its not gona be cheap to fix????
