arrgh fumes.

hi all, i am having a problem with fumes coming into my freeda, the exhaust was blowing so a new one has been put on, but im still getting good old diesel fumes coming into the car when i pull off from being stationary, the seals around the seats are all fine, the exhaust has been checked a lot and its fine, no leaking injectors or broken pipes, the only thing that hasnt been done is to take the manifold off and check that, but have had a look and looks ok apart from a very small bit of soot on the block by the left port (dont know if thats what they are called) of the manifold. i have read on here before about one of the bolts snapping as a common fault and a high pitched squeel is the give away, but i dont have any noises like that and is it the same bolt that always snaps? is it on the left of the manifold (when looking at it from the passenger side) or is there any other ideas?

hi when i recently did my no1 stud that had snapped i checked the others,and found that no8 was looking very iffy.
remove the tin sheild and put some washing up liquid or similar on the manifold top,run the engine to warm it up and repeat,you may just see bubbles.we had no noise at all on ours,but the no1 stud was missing altogether,and the maifold needed 2mm taking off to get it to seat on the new gasket.

fumes are known to get in at the rear door seal also,check that it is ok.

Sometimes the stud looks OK in the hole, but has snapped in place.

With hot air getting trapped under the upturned bowl that is the engine covers, smells will always be trying to rise into the cab. Two thoughts to add to the discussion above:

Firstly, are the engine cover clips pulling the engine cover down firmly enough in place to ensure the engine cover rubber seal is doing its job. You can revitalise the clips by gently bending them to improve teh curve and tension.

Secondly, I have fitted a (fused) manual switched power feed to the scavenger fan. I occasionally get a whiff of diesel in the cab when stationary as I have a v. small leak from the diesel pump. Switching the scavenger fan on cures that at once as it flushes air + whiffs out of the engine bay. It also helps keep engine and car occupants just that little bit cooler. Some have worried that this mod. could upset the ECU but in 3 years of having it fitted I've had no problem.

its def no seals because if i put the air to recurculate and close all the windows i dont get the slightest wiff, but when i flick that switch to outside air the fumes are coming in.
and whats the scavenger fan?

Can't find the thread where I describe fitting the over-ride switch, but a search for 'scavenger fan' will bring up plenty to explain it all to you!
