Ok the van is running but not great, timing is spot on but when the van is running I think I can hear air escaping from the engine :-(

Air intake, turbo etc tightened up ok? turbo manifold maybe? or even inlet manifold?
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

all pipes are ok as i replaced a couple. also getting a bit of greyish smoke from the exhaust. I also can hear clacking :-(

I'd say pump timing's still out TBH, or tappets aren't right maybe?

Timing is still not right.
You are getting closer which usually means IT IS THE TIMING.

valves needing adjusting, the people who skimmed the head (engineering firm) said they did the valves, which it looks like they did but badly :( . so have spent lots of money getting the bongo picked up and fixed for nothing all due to them.
