Alternative Turbo Timer

Post by Dean » Tue Jul 20, 2010 3:06 pm

As turbo timers are illegal isn't there a way to use an LED that stays on for 30 seconds when the gearbox is put into Park?

There must be an electric pick up as there is a light on the dash anyway, I wouldn't know how to make the LED go off after 30s though.

Just a thought

Turbo timers aren't illegal as long as you don't leave the vehicle, with the engine running, on a public road - stay in it until the engine stops and it's fine 8) :D

Its been a little while since I have played with process timers but a simple latching relay and 555 timer circuit would do this no problem, tbh there is probably a much simpler way of doing this nowadays

But how does the LED replace a turbo timer & what function is it performing? If you've rigged it to keep the engine runnning then it's still illegal if you leave it running unattended? if it's not keeping the engine running, what is it doing?
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

I took it Dean was after just some sort of visual display that had a flashing or lit LED for 30 seconds, but I could be wrong :?

Hi
I know it might be daft, but isn't leaving the vehicle with the engine running an invitation, even though the thing will cut out if someone attempts to drive?...you'd be claiming for broken driver's windows several times a week
Cheers

Never had such a problem, the only people that give it a second look are the old farts that are already giving me evils for (rightfully) parking in a disabled space & being under 60  They just about muster the bluster to say sumat & it turns off

I think I should have used the title 'Alternative to the Turbo Timer'
I don't want to leave my Bongo's engine running anywhere unattended, even in the drive, but I forget to leave it running after using it so I thought a light on the dash would remind me

It might, but would you really look at the dash every time before turning it off? why not just fit a turbo timer, but don't leave it unattended? The TT itself isn't illegal.

Timers arent illegal, but having 1 fitted can invalidate your insurance, any VSIB (now Thatcham) reg'd installer should tell you that.

I would if there was a warning light!
