I think peeps fitted a V6 piston engine into them when the rotary engine went pop. RX denotes Rotary (wankel)

By all accounts am i right in assuming that mazda still haven't really got the wankel as reliable as it could be

Mazda did make some of the RX series in two versions. Long ago I owned a Mazda 818 sports coupe which was a RX6 (or something similar) with a conventional engine instead of the Wankel. Identical from the outside, a mate of mine had the rotary version and there was no obvious difference, except the performance.

Most sold were the RX version, but it was notably unreliable and had to worked upon in dust free conditions. Not one of Mazda's better developments.
