2 litre engine check light

I have a newly acquired 2l Bongo. I have driven it about 200 miles with no problems but the engine check light has just come on and stays on, everything still seems to be running OK, I checked the oil recently which was OK. (Oil checked thanks to Bongo forum.) Being new to Bongos I don't know where to start looking, any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I don't think its a battery symbol, it looks like the symbol for an engine in orange/red just below and to right of F in fuel gauge. I do have a pic but have not worked out how to include it, doesn't let me do copy and paste.

Further query, when the check message shows does it mean that the cause is still present or could the cause of the message be temporary but the message is latched?

That looks to me like the oxygen sensor or lambda sensor, i believe some other members have disconnected this with no adverse effects, i think its situated around the catalitic converter it'll be ok for the MOT as well.

Thanks to all for the help, the help given by these forums (also member of Hyundai coupe forum) is always great. Failing oxygen sensor does not sound too serious, I can get the local garage owner to confirm this, he is very competant. I believe the oxygen sensor is there to maintain a correct fuel/air mix and while the engine will run at a default setting without it the fuel consumption will probably not be optimum so I will replace it rather than disconnect.

Could be a lambda sensor problem or any one of half a dozen other problems, they don't usually latch so if the problem is solved then it will go out after it has completed one or two drive cycles. If its OBD2 then you can pick up a scan tool very cheaply and that will also be able to reset the Check Engine Light.
