noisy 4wd auto diesel bongo

Post by natwest » Mon Aug 23, 2010 11:27 pm

hi all,

i have a low resonating engine noise between 2000rpm and 2800 rpm, which is not a problem at higher or lower revs, perhaps these are just noisy but i find it a bit much. i have checked the pipework connections to and from the turbo / air filter etc. the exhaust is pretty new and does'nt seem to be leaking at the joints.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Thanks nat.

Are you sure the noise is eminating from the engine? is it specific to certain revs, or relative road speed?

if its where you say at between 1900 to 3000 revs, that is exactly when the turbo comes in,and reaches its peak,so i would look at the turbo first, and all the air pipes in and out.and all gaskets on the exhaust side.bongos are prone to leaks on the exhaust manifold,so it could be that the no1 stud from the front of the engine has broken, even if it looks ok put a spanner on it to see if its tight,it could have broke and still be sat there doing nothing, and air is leaking/chuffing out.are there smokey deposits here?
has it got the correct engine oil in the engine, should be 5w 30 semi synthetic,or near.

oh and welcome to the forum

Thank you for your quick responses, the turbo makes sense as the noise is at those revs, i thought at first it may be the turbo bearing, i have tightened all the clamps on the hoses to and from the turbo and air filter, no difference. If it was an exhaust manifold stud would it make a low resonating sound or a higher pitched noise/ squeal? i shall check the studs although there are no signs of sooty air leakage when it returns from its travels, i have lent it to a friend and his newborn until friday.

Thanks again
Nat

Do you have the underside plastic engine cowl/tray?

If thats missing it can create quite a racket . . . :?:

Thanks for the tip mr Monkey, it is there but it does have some damage to it inc. a hole so that makes sense. Although the noise goes away above 2800rpm and below 2000rpm.
