Getting ready for winter - Advice Please

Post by celtictigress » Sun Aug 29, 2010 9:27 am

Hi all,

I bought my Bongo in May of this year (absolutely love it) so we've yet to experience the pleasure of a Scottish winter.

What precautions should I take?

I've heard it should be waxoyled, but I don't know if its already been done. Campercraft will do it for just £89 so it may well be worth it.

Anything else that should be done?

Many thanks

£89 for a waxoyl jobbie sounds rather cheap. Thats more than likely a coating over the visible undersides as opposed to a full treatment but worth getting done. Remember to remove the spare wheel first.

After us spending a few days up that way over christmas last year - Blog Link - my top tip would be tp prepare for the bitter cold.

Make sure coolant is up to strength, if in doubt, flush & change it & have plentiful supplies of Arctic screenwash.

Carry shovel, blankets, brew kit, food, 12v charger for mobile phone (but don't realy on this as there may be no signal), let someone know where you're going/ETA.

Make sure your tyres are in good nick, plenty of fuel, book to read if you get stuck, something to entertain the kids, obtain up to date weather info...

Skid pan course, tow rope, old sack/carpet to gain traction, bag of sand/salt...

Let's be careful out there. :D
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

We had our Bongo done by Campercraft when they imported it earlier this year. The undersides (including behind the spare wheel) are all done with a rubber based coating which is heated up then sprayed on and left to dry. They only used Waxoyl for the caities such as the doors to stop the bodywork rotting from the inside out.
