Is this the sound of a belt slipping?
The bongo developed an annoying squeal while we were away. I'm assuming its a slipping belt... and it sounds like this (download about 190K):

can anyone confirm?
We also had trouble with our leisure battery - which I guess could also point to the alternator belt (or it could be unrelated).
Thanks

No 1 manifold stud broken.....easy fix (my best guess as the link failed)
Re: Is this the sound of a belt slipping?
Sounds like what I expect No1 stud to sound like - well, it's what mine sounds like and I haven't had time to check yet. Next job on the list I guess!
Re: Is this the sound of a belt slipping?
Maybe this link will work instead (it sounds uncannily like the noise the demon made in the 1950's film "Night of the demon"
)

I had a Bongo garage check the No 1 manifold stud about a month ago, and it passed muster then (they also replaced the belts). I did push the Bongo pretty hard over the last couple of weeks up and down the Pyrenees, though.

Hmmm.... Mine sounded fine until I went over the Alps twice.

Just had my No1 and 8 stud done with replacement gasket etc, squealed when setting off and when giving it a bit of welly !!
Now no squeals hurrahhh

Was the engine hot or cold when you recorded the sound?
Allans Garage retired. Try PGS (Plymouth Garage Services) or Mayflower Auto Services Plymouth

It would help if you could do the same again but with a couple of blips on the throttle.
I caught the sound on the second link, it does sound like it could be a stud problem but its more dectectable with a bit of welly. The noise changes to a strangled budgie kind of sound under load.

Re: Is this the sound of a belt slipping?
Sounds very much like belt squeek, not necessarily belt slip.
Get a sqeeze bottle full of water and spray on the belts while
ticking over. If it stops squeeking immediately it's the belts.

Thanks all for the replies.
We were supposed to return via the Alps, but we're now saving that for next year.Hmmm.... Mine sounded fine until I went over the Alps twice.
It was cold when I recorded it. In fact, I think I was only aware of the noise at the start of each journey. Was the engine hot or cold when you recorded the sound?
I'll do another recording tomorrow and give it a few revs.It would help if you could do the same again but with a couple of blips on the throttle.

sounds like a pulley rattling to me
.
i would slacken all the belts and check the pulleys carefully.

Re: Is this the sound of a belt slipping?
Now I've heard it ..It dosn't sound like a manifold stud or belts....I will go with ADY above
Re: Is this the sound of a belt slipping?
If it's a pulley rattling, is that a more serious issue (I'm completely non-mechanical)? Am I best not driving it until its sorted - or can it wait until I'm able to get it to Bellhill (there's a good garage round the corner from me, but its not a Bongo one)

If it's a pully rattleing...I would get it recovered to a garage....If it flys off it could do more damage...Or get a mobile mechanic to check it out.

Sounds like an alternator bearing.
