Oil Leak From Front Diff - Should I Worry?

Post by mister munkey » Fri Sep 17, 2010 8:19 pm

Noticed quite a liberal spread of oil inside the passenger side front wheel arch & over the wishbone this afternoon, seems to be coming from the driveshaft area but hard to pinpoint until I clean it up & look again.

Combined with a transmission whine type sound over the last week or so leads me to believe I may have another headache on the horizon . . . .

Is this something that could possibly need urgent attention or just a short term top up - if so whats the script??

Had this on another vehicle, was the axle seal letting Ep 90 past it, was an easy fix on that vehicle, not had the freda axle stripped down yet. Not sure if this post even helped.

Hi,
It would be worthwhile checking your CV boot,it might be grease on your wheel arch etc,if the boot is split and the grease is escaping it could cause the joint to be noisy.Check your diff for oil as well.

Cheers..

Boot is fine, new one at last Mot.

There's more above the boot than below - if you get my drift . . . .

chris, the front and rear difs operate on a negative pressure, this means that the breather allows air out when the diff gets hot, when it cools it does not let air back in, so holds a vacuum, this vacuum also stops pressure being put on the hub oil seal,it holds the oil in(ish),that and the seal, check the breather is ok,dont know about repairing the seal though, shouldnt be a bad job.
should be topped up asap really as it sounds like its being cooked.
i would drain it chris, and look for bits of metal in the oil that comes out,(if any),should be 1.2 litres in the front.millars syntran 2,is the best stuff.ive got some if yer stuck.
