Front Fogs whirring noise

Post by jasonlig » Tue Sep 21, 2010 12:42 pm

Very foggy this morning so for the first time i thought i would try out the fog lights on my Bongo.
The rear one worked fine using a rather bland switch (always wondered what it did) that was next to the front fog light switch.

On turning both of the switches on they lit up, but the front lights didn't(haven't checked the bulbs yet). The strange thing is that it's making a weird wurring noise, like a fan or motor has been turned on. Any ideas? :?

Hi,

It might be the relay chattering.

Cheers..

PS Try turning on the head lights at the same time.

Oh thanks for the idea it could be.. its fairly loud and more wurry than clicky but worth a try.
I can hear the noise from both inside and from the bonet.

Any ideas where the relay is?

I was trying it on dipped, as i thought fog lights work best in dipped as you can see further..as the main beam always makes it worse. Or is this just me?

Hi,
If you have factory fitted lamps, the relay is normally on the N/S inner wing, the one nearest the front of the vehicle.

Cheers..

Are you certain that the other switch is for Front Fog Lights, neither lights or relay would make a "wurring" noise, but the quick heat start up system switch is in a similar position I think ? Now that does close various flaps and and would change the sound of the engine!!

No, you're right :D Only driving/spot lights should come on with main beam 8)

Not a (Mikeon style) scavenger fan over ride switch perchance.... ??

may sound a bit of a strange Q but does your horn work ok,maybe got a short circuit going on,as they are quite near each other, and i think the relays are.one for geoff me thinks :) .

Thanks for all the suggestions.. no idea what the "scavenger fan" is will have to google that.

Deffinately the front fog switch, unless someone in Japan decided to make use of it for something else :?

Had a little poke under the bonet and it appears that noise is comming from the one of two relays next to the leisure battery. Guess i'll have to pull the offending one out to find out what part i need. Hopefully it's just a dodgy relay and not something else going wrong.

Hi jason, the scavenger fan is an extra fan aside from the rad fans to extract hot air, and move air around the engine compartment in the bongo.

Coming back to the original problem, given that it is the relay chattering, check that the earth point for the relay and lights is OK, its unlikely that the relay itself is faulty, it sounds like the extra current being drawn by the lights is then causing the relay to drop out as they use the same earth point (1);

The earth point is located here in the front
