Engine and gearbox oil change questions

Post by fanx_ta_ra » Thu Oct 07, 2010 5:21 pm

Hi All,

Am taking the Bongo on a road trip at the end of this month so want to replace the engine oil and gearbox oil beforehand.

With regards to the engine (2.5TD). Are any of the popular engine flush treatments (i.e Wynns etc) actually of any benefit or does anyone have there own way of doing this. On a previous forum it was recommended to use diesel as a flushing agent but I never had the nerve as it seems a bit ..... well not just right!. Your views please ladies and gentlemen.

The engine oil change is no problem to me, done it many a time, but have never done an auto gearbox. I seem to recall seeing on here a pictorial guide on how to do the job including removing and cleaning the filter/strainer etc, but cant find it now for the life of me so any help there would be welcome.

Am going to use a Pela pump for the gearbox, then when empty remove the sump and filter/strainer. Now do i clean these with petrol or diesel or will they both do the job?. I intend to be extra careful when removing the sump so as not to damage the gasket, but if the worst happens and the gasket is damaged will instant gasket(i.e Granville or Loctite) be a ready replacement or will I have to use a soild gasket?. Upon refitting the sump is there a specific torque setting to be adhered to?. Again your advice will be really welcome and many thanks in advance!!

Kind Regards, Andy

Kirsty posted info and pics about how to change the ATF (you can also renew the filter), here's THE LINK. Is it the one you were looking for?
Allans Garage retired. Try PGS (Plymouth Garage Services) or Mayflower Auto Services Plymouth

Hi Doone

That is indeed the guide I was looking for. I knew it was on here somewhere but it seemed to be hiding from me, so thankyou very much for taking the time to post a reply.

Kind Regards, Andy
