Grease Nipple

Post by mikexgough » Tue Oct 12, 2010 7:57 am

Having been "talking" to my Japanese Bongo friends, we got "chatting" about servicing and I was pointed to a picture on a blog showing the bleed nipple on the propshaft..... (the chatting and talking in in pigeon Japanese/english  )

This has been covered before http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... ase+nipple but strangely only once and a couple of years ago, could it be that a) it is always greased or b) no one really knows about it...?

And it may eliminate or reduce the "clunk" that some folks mention that happens when they engage the gearbox......

AFAIK Mike, if your's is a 2 wheel drive you won't need the grease gun. :)

wot a shame - and I was looking forward to ridding my Bongo of its clunk (not that it has much of one, and only if I don't keep my foot on the brake while shifting into 'D').

This should be done as part of standard service? we had a car in couple of weeks ago with the rear prop hanging apart, not sure if greasing would have helped that lol

Yes grease points should be included in a Service, but it sounds like it would be overkill on that propshaft.

Surely all propshafts have a grease nipple on the sliding splines whether its 2 or 4WD?? It's there to allow the propshaft to extend and contract as the wheelbase changes when the suspension moves through an arc. :?

Funny how this post just popped up - I greased my Hiace propshaft just yesterday.........................

I can't speak for 2wd owners as I am a 4wd owner and I have a nipple...but the Workshop manual (just looked  ).... shows the grease nipple on the propshaft (in a stand alone propshaft section in the said manual) so going by that information.....

It would suggest that there is a grease nipple on the 2wd versions too.....Maybe a 2wd owner would like to confirm or deny that indeed their Bongo has a grease nipple on the propshaft....

Its on my list, cos Dandys thought was running through my head also. But I may not get a round tuit for a while, due to other stuff. 8)

Just checked below my old Bongo - its a sealed sliding joint on the 2WD.

Symptoms of a dry sliding joint are an annoying creak when driving and a vibration as the greasless joint tries to slide as the suspension moves.

Thanks for pm Doone :D

Happy to help as always. I knew there wasn't a grease point on the 2wd, it would be useful if the handbook mentioned that. I asked Al to explain a bit more to me tonight, so I've sent you both another pm.
