Roof Bars For Newer Aero Auto Freetop roof

Post by Noggin » Thu Oct 21, 2010 10:20 pm

Hi All,

As I've said in another post I'm thinking of training my Bongo in and getting a newer one.

However I use my bongo for transporting my Kayaks so really need it to have roof bars. I got a great fitting kit for my currant bongo but does anyone here know if it's possible to fit a roof rack to the new style aero roof? Does it still have the same mounting bolt holes?

Hi Noggin, I think you are a customer who bought my adaptor kit from EBay.

If so, the new style AFT has the same 4 mounting holes, but what it doesn't have is the 2 long grooves along the roof.

If you have my adaptors you will see that the slightly overhang the groove, this allows space for the bottom clamp of the gutter fixing roof bar to go underneath the adaptor.

You do not have the groove on the new roof, so you need to make space to allow the clamp under the adaptor. At your own risk you could put spacers such as washers under the adaptor until you had enough clearance, I would suggest putting the washers at the front and rear of the adaptors, and once you have worked out how many you need, and the thickness, get 4 off LONGER bolts - the ones I supply are 16mm , so for example if you put 4.5mm of spacer in get 20mm bolts, if 7.5mm say get 25mm. The thread is M8 - 1.25, which is a standard size.
The washers supplied are 8mm x 25mm x 1.5mm.

If you are unsure of anything please ask!

Good luck with your hunt and I am glad you are staying with a Bongo! :D

Very Helpful Munroman,

Yes I did buy one of your kits from ebay, and just as promised it works perfectly and has saved me a small fortune.

It sounds to me like there could be a market for an aero roof bar mounting kit too! :)
