Why you should keep a skinny spare (or two)

Post by Diplomat » Thu Oct 21, 2010 11:46 pm

Went to back a wheel on to one of my ramps. Then realised that, since changing from 205/70s all round to 215/65s on the back, the tyre was too wide for the ramp and might get cut into.

No problem with the skinny spare on temporarily and it doesn't get in the way so much. I was fitting a new exhaust.

I was going to bin it. Knew it would come in useful.

Be careful if you are using a single ramp.

I changed the centre section of my exhaust recently, and used a single ramp under one rear wheel. When I went to put the ramp away I noticed that it had partially distorted under the weight. If I'd used a pair of ramps, the load on each one would have been less. I had to use the trolley jack to re-shape the ramp, and then weld in additional bracing so it's safe to use.

That's partly why I added 'or two'.

I have used a single ramp but prefer to raise the van evenly.

Using narrower tyres before, the problem is new to me.

The ramps I have are heavy duty by car standards but only just by Bongo standards.
