Auto box level ?

Whilst checking for diesel leeks today i noticed what looked like a long dipstick under the drivers seat, is this for the autobox level and if so whats the correct checking proceedure, engine running or engine off ?

I normally check engine running & up to temperature after a bit of a spin & running through the various drive selections... But could be wrong??!!

Thanx for the swift responce jaylee, most auto boxes are with engine running but there are a few that have to be done stone cold engine off i'll give it a go tomorrow

Thats a bit dubious being in drive when your not actually in conrtol of the vehicle but have your head under the drivers seat, what would the insurance company say if the van took off with no driver in it ?

That is in fact correct M80NGO ,handbrake up t`taters and chock wheels if it makes you feel more comfortable

I know what you mean.... But my handbrakes good, & I'm there to push the footy & switch off if dubious! ( I think yer meant to chock the wheels too?!!)

put it in park,no need for drive.
the reason some say drive is because there is a bit of splashing in park.less in drive.
