New Battery Help!

Hi All,

My bongo has a really cr@ppy battery from when I got it from the importer 8 months ago and its just died. Its not the proper battery as its a ford 68ah one and it looks a little dinky -my bongo didnt even have a clamp to hold it down (indeed, the second battery tray & battery for the winter pack and my ABS sensors had also dissappeared...hmmm.) but thats another story.

As I dont have the original proper fit battery, I'm a little unsure what to replace it with. The comparison parts chart suggests a Land Rover Discovery 105ah Motaquip one, but doesnt say whether one from a Discovery diesel series II or III will fit. I've seen a few other posts with pointers (emailed one of the shops in question but not heard back), but can anyone give me a definitive battery model (i.e. varta) that will fit?

There is a standard numbering for batteries try for either 95 a/h or 105 a/h battery capacity and a battery type 068 or 249.
The 068 and 249 define the size and terminal types, the 95A/H or 105A/H define the capacity.

Ours has a Yuasa 030 fitted. It's 70Ah but I wouldn't go lower, if anything one with a bit more power wouldn't do no harm, ( I think I've read its a 335 ).
You pays your money & takes your choice.
I would go to your local car parts suppliers with a trade counter to buy one though, you'll get a better price than you would from Hallfords etc

PS just found 2 other threads & someone fitted a NUMAX UK249. 85Ah 680CCA & the other a VARTA G7. 95Ah 830CCA.
These make mine look a bit small....

I got a Yuasa 030 last year....top battery,£41...600 CCA. 3 years warranty and matched by the Trade Counter to the JIS number......fires up the engine on the button.....and yep 70Ah ......

The manual gives 4 battery Ah sizes 48/52/55/64Ah.... all common Japanese JIS numbers BUT the 95D31L that was 64Ah is now spec'd up to 80Ah.....

I usually say like the others 068 or 249..... yer pays yer money .....most only give 3 years warranty ...

I'd agree with that. Get a 95Ah battery as its worth it in the long run. I suspect some of the starting problems put down to glowplug failure may actually be linked to tired low-rated batteries suffering voltage drop to the plugs when hte engine is cranked. I can't prove it, but I can say my 95Ah has not batted an eyelid (do batteries have eyelids and if so, do they batt them - hmmmm ) in 4yrs of use, and the Bongo starts every time at a flick of the key.

Thats the one I have just bought and fitted!, very pleased with it and seems to have cured my glow plug light problem!

I eventually got the 95ah battery from these folk, fast delivery and seems good. Bought the same battery for my engine start battery on the boat and it has been brilliant, starting has improved no end, preheat time down from 30 seconds to 10 and no throttle instaed of full throttle to start.

I'm confused. This link is to the Bosch S4008 which is a 74Ah battery not a 95Ah! It is the 096 format with Japanese turret connections.
Are people getting the form factor 096 mixed up with the capacity (Ah rating) or is it me?

I'm needing one too as of today - actually I seem to need two - one for my Toyota 2.0 diesel.
Do you think I will get a discount for buying two at once?

068 is a common Japanese equivalent and rated at 70 ah and 640 CCA (which is more than the max 64 Ah in the manual) and the 249 is the nearest UK/EU equivalent that is spec'd up at 95 ah......

I use the 70 ah myself and my Bongo diesel starts on the button, and as with most starter batteries you get a 3 year warranty.....if you feel you need the extra 31Ah over the Factory spec then by all means go for it....
