Any 50/50 ethylene glycol base/water mix (-36 C protection) should do it - and when they get going again, they'll also have good corrosion protection life with the mix in that optimum ratio

Well evaporation is only one factor agreed for the human body, but you can't cool something below the ambient temperature just by blowing wind at it, but rather than a long write up its why I pointed those wanting to know more at Wikipedia,if you don't trust Wikipedia there are plenty of other sources.

Wow - this topic is getting deep!

For peace of mind I'm going to pop down to the garage I use for them to test the strength of my coolant, and if need be they said they'll drain some out and top it up. They did the last coolant change so they will know which stuff they used too.

Cheers

Called in at the garage tonight and they tested my coolant/antifreeze strength and I'm good down to -25. :D
Also we agreed that they'll do a coolant change next May as it's in for a service/MOT then anyway and it will have been 2 years since it was last changed.

Cheers

That's a lot better than the -15C you thought you has, isn't it Andrew? With a flush and re-fill next May, you're not at much risk of the dreaded sludging either. Mine's only at -29C at the moment, rather than the intended -36C, due to incomplete flush out, when last done, so it's not going to be used for its full rated 3 years life, anyway (it's a 3 years extended life anti-freeze, when correctly used).

BTW, just noticed I wrongly read your post at 8:50 pm on the 14th as saying you consdered a complete change to neat anti-freeze (instead of what you did say - i.e., topping up with it), so by my own fault I was totally at cross purposes when I responded at 9.32 #-o
