It is a bit bizarre really, it's a coarse filter located downstream of a fine filter - and it's not uncommon to find crap in them. How did it get there?

Checked mine it was clean, so Dave how many other filters are in the system, apart from the big main filter?

I like to think of it as "the filter of last resort". If any bits manage to get through the main filter or break off the fuel pump that is the barrier to stop them entering the fuel supply system and doing serious damage to the engine.

Keeps other irritants clear of the fuel system too.

I've never heard one of these to cause a blockage yet.

My local diesel specialist said I should throw it away.

I didn't because that would have involved effort.

There is an opinion that the process of removing it, to clean it, could knock dirt into the chamber you removed it from. #-o

I've checked mine twice in the last +/-4yrs. It was fine both times.
Probably won't check again.

Hi Barrington,

There are 3 filters...one in the tank, the main throw away filter and what you call the banjo filter.

Cheers..

When my banjo filter blocked, there were signs of fibres from the main filter element :? and something gritty #-o Anyway, it has saved mine from whatever is was getting through to the injectors/cylinders, so it stays 8)

I believe it's there to trap the fine particles that come off a NEW filter during manufacture.
That's why Yamaha say to replace the oil filter only every 2 (6000 mile) oil changes :)

That wouldn't have been a blue fibre would it John? The odd times i've removed the filter for a cursory check, i ONCE found a stray blue fibre in the filter! Funnily enough, not long after replacing the main fuel filter! :-s

Can't remember the colour Steve. I was assuming that they were from the newly fitted fuel filter, because the banjo filter actually looked clean, until I wiped it and there was a very, very thin layer of "fluff" (No comments about bits of fluff please [-X  )

Exactly - tiny fibres from the new filter - madness to throw away something there for a purpose.............. :?
