Changed Brake Pad Problems

Hi

I have just spent the last few hours changing the front brake pads, so just took it the van out for a run to try everything out, and the brake pedal first press goes almost to the floor then second press you get good brakes, the same thing happens each time you press the brakes, even if you have just done it 10 seconds before.

Anybody have any ideas what would be causing this

Hi G,
It sounds like you have a non return valve sticking in the master cylinder,or you have somehow let air into the system.

I forgot to add that whilst pushing the pistons back in to get them past the new pads some brake fluid came out past the seal round the piston

Hi sounds like you could have drawn air into that caliper,try bleeding it,but if it is still leaking replace it.

Did you loosen the top of the master cylinder before pushing the pistons back in?

Agree it sounds like air in the system, but very unusual to have leakage from the seals.......

it does sound like air in the caliper, also, not sounding like i"m teaching you to suck eggs, new brake pads can make the brakes feel a tad spongey until bedded in .

If the piston came out at all, you will almost certainly have got air in. A bleed and top up will sort it. Easy fix

You will probably get away with just bleeding the side that leaked but you may wish to take the opportunity to pump some fresh fluid through the system.

Yeah did a bleed and thats it all fixed and ready for its MOT.

I'd be concerned that you lost fluid around the piston seal!
