More Gear Change Problems

Post by flossie » Fri Dec 10, 2010 1:13 pm

Ok I was hoping mine was the cold start problem but throughout ahort journey last night and 115 mile this morning I am getting a really unnerving jolt when gear box trying to change up or down between second and third. Worse the more I push it but doesn't always happen .. Seems like it's ' missing' ... any ideas ? Been suggested to out transmission fluid into gear box but I'm dreading more big expense which seems to be the order of the day for ms at the moment.

Please help !!

Hi Liz,

OK I'm no auto gearbox expert but have had a changing issue with mine a while back.

In my case it would slip inbetween changing gear sometimes, came on suddenly. I knew my fluid was failry new, clean and up to the correct level as it was changed that year. It tended to be better if I gave it lots of throttle.

I did some web research and found out that there is a throttle position sensor that could be at fault. This basically is an electrical sensor on the side of the throttle body housing that tells the car electronics how hard you are pressing the accelerator. This in combination with other factors helps the car know when to change gear.

Mine had gone faulty and was presumably sending out all kinds of erratic readings, confusing the electronics and leading to strange gear changes.

From memory it was about £140 for the part (direct from mazda) and I fitted it myself. Instant fix, and things great ever since.

So if you are going into see Fred it may just be worth buying a new one in advance as where the wiring plug is on the TPS it's very hard to get at and test in situ.

If you need details of the part number and supplier (they post) let me know but worth considering.

There is a guy on here that is very experienced with auto transmissions so I'd also wait for him to post as he knows far more about it that I do, however thought I'd let you know what happened in my case.

Hope this helps.
